From back of card: "Collector's description: "Jointed sword used in masqurade dances. The performer comes in with the sword around his neck like a necklace. A stuffed figure to resemble a serpent is then brought in when the indian by a slight of hand movement pulls the string which straightens the sword and the serpent is attacked and destroyed."

From card: "Wrapped or birdcage weaving, warp of cedar twigs, weft of spruce root splints, flannel bag to go over the head for carrying." From Emmons tag with the artifact: "Kwakiutl basket from East + N.W. coast of Vancouver Id used for shellfish, roots for carrying ones back. The ribs of basket are cedar twigs. The woof intertwining of spruce root."

From card: "Half of an old box top, the front portion laid with the different teeth of a sea otter. Such pieces are very old and are greatly prized by the natives who upon occasions of ceremony and the distribution of property, present them to the more honored guests as gifts."Emmons talks about this artifact in his letter of May 28, 1902, written from Victoria, B.C., filed in the accession file. He identifies it there as from the Blunden Harbor [sic] Kwakiutl.

Though catalogued as #2 in the collection, this object is actually #4 on the detailed list filed in the accession record, and is identified there as from Knights [sic, should be Knight] Inlet, B.C..
