Pipe Bag67.26.18

The object is a bag made of hide and decorated with woven glass beads. One side depicts diamond forms, 4 sturgeons, 2 condors and 2 men. The other side depicts 3 men, 4 horses and two condors. The bottom f the bag has four tabs with tassels of strung beads and shells. Along the top edge of the bag are two lines of blue beads and two dressed hide loop handles. Condition: It is in fair and stable condition. Several areas of beads are missing and the left side join area needs stabilizing. Conservation report on file.

Carved wooden spoon. The bowl is large and elongated, narrow, and with a tapering tip. The handle is straight, flat, and squared at the end, with a slightly rounded underside. The interior of the bowl is painted with a red and green stylized Northwest Coast design, while the handle and back of the spoon are undecorated.

Large, carved wooden ladle. The bowl is deep with an up-sloping, open front and a well- rounded bottom. The handle is thick, with the end carved into a duck(?) head, a long beak carved along the back of the handle. Decorations are etched into the wood, some emphasized with burn marks. These include eyes on the duck, lines along its beak, and horizontal stripes down the back of the neck. Flowers adorn the lower handle and bowl, and a man’s head with headdress is scratched into the bowl’s bottom. The word “Souvenir.” is carved in elegant script on one side of the handle. A piece of rope is looped loosely around the neck.

Dagger with carved animal head made of whale bone on butt end of handle. Animal's eyes, nostrils and teeth are made of abalone shells. Rest of handle is wrapped in braided fibre. Bolster is made of bone. Blade is long and triangular with a sharp pointed tip and a lengthwise rib. Blade is brown with a black mottled patina.

A: Two shirts of buckskin hide, quite similar to each other. Decorated with blue and white sequins, along with various anthropomorphic figures and heads on one shirt. B: buckskin leggings 'A1: Shirt with animal (?deer) hooves attached to the fringes of the arms. There are traces of red dye on the shirt. The sleeves have 2 small bands with white and blue beads. There are fringes on the arm openings, the bottom edge and along the sides. There are small holes at the back. A2: Shirt with fringes at the arms and the sides. The shirt is painted in black with anthropomorphic designs at the front and the back. There are some red, white blue beads at the back. The front has a disk motif with white and blue beads. The sleeves have painted white and black stripes painted. There are also ribbons hanging from the shirt. B: The leggings are undecorated. There are short fringes at the sides, top and bottom of the leggings. F. Veys, 14/9/2005'Martin Schultz suggested that the pendents on A1 are puffin beaks.
