Garment3188/12 a-b

Hand woven tunic (part a) and pants (part b) made of thick unbleached and undyed cotton. Tunic is long, with three quarter sleeves, a high neck, and zipper closure at back. At hem and wrists, as well as in a deep ‘v’ on shoulders and chest are attached thin bands of embroidery, consisting of evenly spaced diamonds in a variety of colours interspersed with ‘v’ shapes in black and red. Pants are narrow through the hips and thighs and widen toward ankles, constructed with seams down the back of each leg and several short pleats at waistband. Closure is by side zipper. Pants are undecorated.

Matching shawl for cotton dress (Ca36 a). The shawl is white and rectangular, with a black oda tree motif arranged in a staggered double row on both ends.

Milk Container1393/1

A tall jug with a rounded bottom which tapers upward and has a flared base. The lid has a cylindrical stem which flared outward and downward and has capped overtop. The top of the lid has white, light blue, and orange beads at the centre with circular rows of blue, white and dark blue, and red beads. The sides of the lid are decorated with cowrie shells and horizontal rows of red, and white and dark blue beads. The lid is held in place with a band of skin decorated with cowrie shells. The jug is decorated with vertical rows of cowrie shells on bands of skin. The whole object is woven.

Milk Container1047/1 a-b

Tear-drop-shaped skin container with a narrow opening and a protruding looped handled. Container has three flaps of skin attached under the handle. Skin flaps are decorated with two rows of shells and have skin and shell tassels on the end of each flap. Part b is the lid to the container. It is cone-shaped, tapers near the centre and flares out at the top. It is decorated with rows of blue and white, and red beads around the perimeter radiating from the top of the lid. The outer edges of the flared top of the lid have two rows of blue and white beads on either side of a double row of red beads. At the base of the lid is a single row of alternating black and white beads.

White cotton dress with a rounded neck, long sleeves, a fitted bodice and gathered waist. The full skirt is made of three panels and reaches mid-calf in length. The dress has a long metal zipper down the back and is lined with commercial cotton. Along bottom of the skirt is a white and black border with multicoloured metallic detailing. The border has a black oda tree motif arranged in a staggered double row. Matching shawl (Ca36 b).

Bread ContainerK3.6 a-b

Circular basket (parts a-b) with a coil construction of base (part b) and lid (part a); sides are coiled and imbricated. Exterior of both parts are covered with calfskin; stripes of skin are also used for the carrying strap which attaches at two points to the sides of the base. There are four looped straps attached to the sides of the base to secure the lid. Skin strips are stitched around the circumference of both the lid and the base. The lid has small, vertical sides and a conical shaped top with a thin leather strap attached at the tip.
