Qur'an3039/1 a-b

Book of the Qur’an, inscribed in naskh script inside the cover. The first few pages are highly coloured and decorative. Most other pages of script are bordered by a simple band of gold and blue, with most of the script in black and red ink. Chapter headers are painted with brightly coloured decorative bands. The cover has a flowered pattern painted(?) onto the outside; a flower patterned paper adhered to the inside covers. Pages are loosely bound with string, currently only attached in one place to the cover. (Part b is a soft fabric cover that is sewn in the shape of an envelope; in storage.)

Writing EquipmentM4.26 a-d

Paper case holding items used for writing. The thick paper is painted then covered with a coat of lacquer. The image on the case (part a) depicted is a miniature of a woman standing with an umbrella. Her appearance is a representation of the Safaviya period in Iran. Each side has two students seated while being taught by an older, male teacher. Bottom is red with gold border. Part b has a landscape image on the end while the rest is red with a black border. Part c is a metal container with a lid that contains pieces of fibre used to make ink. Part d is metal spoon with a leaf like bowl.

Calligraphy2645/3

Calligraphy on the insides of two hinged sheets. The left image has lines of text which are outlined in thin black ink following the shape of the words. The lines of text are separated by blue lines. An English language upper case S is on a rectangular black background with flower motifs. The entire text is surrounded by green, then pink, borders. The background is dark blue with a painted design above the pink border. The right image is text with gold painted between the outlined text. Blue, gold, and red triangles are at opposing corners and on the sides. Green and pink borders surround the text with a background of dark blue. There is a translation of the text with the possible author at the outside front. The front and back have writing at the top right and left respectively.

Calligraphy2645/1

Two hinged sheets with calligraphy. The left inside image is black ink calligraphy surrounded by a thin ink outline that is cloud-like in shape around the words. The background is gold paint which is divided by dark red-brown lines. A light pink border surrounds the gold background, and a dark blue border surrounds the pink one. These are on a large green background. There is writing above the blue border. Thin black lines follow the edges of each border and background. The writing in the right image is outlined in dark red-brown. There is a blue triangle in the upper right corner with red flowers. Writing appears above the blue border. There is a translation of the two texts on the front outside of the sheet which possibly contain the authors of those texts. Writing appears on the front lower left corner and on the back left corner.

Pedestal Dish1296/1 a-b

A large light silver-coloured pedestal dish (part a) with a lid (part b). The dish (part a) has a shallow bowl with a central spiral floral design within a large circle that has petals around it, and a row of partially dotted semi-circles around the edge, with an ornately decorated petal-like edging along the rim. The plain cylindrical stem has a rounded circular protrusion in the middle with vertical rows and a horizontal row around the middle. The rounded base is decorated with a floral design with semi-circles around the rim. The ornately decorated floral patterned lid (part b) is high and rounded with a circular knob at the top centre.

Round jar with flared neck and foot ring. Decoration is in grey-blue on grey ground. Patterns consist of a wide band on body of diagonal branch-like lines alternating with diagonal groups of two straight lines; a thinner band at top of body of diagonal cross-hatching with borders of two horizontal lines; on shoulder a band of diagonal crosshatching without borders; blue line around neck; perpendicular lines on rim.

Pen Case1262/328

Long, rectangular brass container with a rounded end and rounded, hinged top--top has a centred, crown-shaped knob. Attached to the side of the case at the top is a smaller square container with a shell-shaped hatch opening. The smaller container is attached to the longer rectangular container in such a manner that the latter lays horizontally while the former sits upright to be opened. The entire object is engraved with an intricate floral pattern with several imaged of animals.

Bowl1262/331 a-b

The bowl (part a) has a concavely curved stem upon which the bulging bowl rests. The lid (part b) has a seven-petaled knob in the centre. The design consists of horizontal bands of diamond-shaped patterns, compact cordate patterns, and floral patterns. Bands of script (possibly Farsi ?) around the bowl and lid.
