Retablo Altar2903/18

Secular portable altar containing three dimensional figures representing a hat shop. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white. On the sides and tops of the object, there are pink, purple, yellow and orange spirals painted over top the background. On the front of each of the two doors of the object, there is a painted flower. The flowers are painted red with purple and yellow accents and green leaves. Over the doors there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the top of the altar that creates a peaked roofline on the façade. It is painted yellow with orange circles decorating it. The insides of the doors have red, purple and grey flowers painted on them. There is also a yellow flower with long stamen painted in the corners on each of the doors. The interior walls of the altar are painted green with purple borders. Twenty three white wide-brimmed hats with black bands around them are hung on the walls. In the lower left corner of the image, a man in a yellow cap, purple coat and purple pants sits upon a red stool. There is a red bowl resting on the ground in front of him. Right of the man, there is a man standing upon a brick-like object. He wears a red jacket, yellow shirt and blue pants. In front of the man, there are four hats resting on the ground around him. The hats are in various stages of being formed. In the lower right corner, there is a man in a green jacket and purple pants sitting upon a red stool. In his left hand, he holds a piece of thread. In front of him, there is an orange hat stand with four hats on it. There is also a grey mortar and pestle. On the back of the object, the artist’s name, a date and a location written in red paint. Also, a year is written in black pen and a number is written in pencil.

Retablo Altar2903/11

Shallow portable altar with two tiers inside. The outside of the altar is painted light grey with various flower motifs over top. On the exterior of the left door, there is a blue and purple flower. The flower on the right door is painted dark grey and red. Above the doors, on the façade of the altar, there is a piece of wood that creates a gently rounded roofline; it is painted red. The interior of the doors have flowers painted on them. The top tier within the altar has small clay figures depicting the four evangelists who are lined against the back wall of the altar. On the left, an evangelist holds a small animal (lamb?) in his right arm and a staff in his left arm. He has long black hair, a halo and wears a red robe. Next to him, another evangelist holds a book and a staff and wears a brown robe and a red cape. To his right, a haloed evangelist holds a staff with a cross at its top. He also holds a lamb. The evangelist on the furthest right holds a pen in one hand and a book in the other. Between the evangelists’ heads, there are small clay objects attached to the back wall of the altar, which look like a bird’s-eye-view of wide-brimmed hats. In front of the evangelist on the furthest left there is a woman who wears a red head scarf, peaked cap and brown skirt, holding an unknown object. There is a child to the right who wears a grey shirt, red suspenders and red pants, also with an unknown object. Right of the child, there is an animal (bull?) resting on all fours; it has horns and red and black fur. Next to this animal, there is another animal with horns, possibly a goat. There is a dark grey squirrel next to the goat. In front of the child, there is a very small horse wearing a saddle and bridle. There is a small dog (?) that appears to be sniffing the horse. Next to the dog, there is a tall animal with curved horns, possibly a ram. A brown llama (?) sits on all fours right of the ram. A yellow and red bird with black stripes stands on the ground right of the llama. A yellow and black striped animal that has lost its head is right of the bird. On the furthest right in the foreground of the top tier, there is a black and red bird that stands with its beak pointing upwards. The tier below depicts Earth. On the ceiling of this tier, there is a dark blue bird flying over the Earth. In the background on the left side of the altar, there is a man in a red shirt and yellow hat holding a small bundle of grain. Next to him, a man holds a large bundle of grain or sticks. To his right, there is a man in a pointed cap, red shirt and black pants. He holds a jug over his left shoulder. The man to the right wears a spotted hat and holds a book open in his right hand. There are three women right of the man who holds the book. They hold various small utensils. In front of the man on the furthest left, a man rides a horse and holds a stringed instrument (guitar?). A woman in a red head scarf kneads dough to the right of the horse. A man in a red cap and red shirt approaches this woman from the right. There is a spotted animal with red spots and horns (bull?) next to the man in the red cap. There is a man crouched in front of the back legs of the spotted animal; he appears to be milking it. Right of the spotted animal, a man pets a four legged animal. In front of the man on the horse, there is a small grey rabbit. Next to the rabbit, there are small balls of dough clustered together on the ground. There is a small four-legged animal looking at the dough on the ground. There is a rooster right of the small animal. Next to the rooster, there is a yellow and red duck that has lost its head. A blue spotted animal sits on its hind legs next to the duck. There is a small grey dish on the furthest left in the foreground. Throughout the background of the altar, there are small red and grey spots. Two numbers are written in pencil on the back of the object.

Small altar with nativity scene inside. The exterior of the altar is painted yellow-white with red borders. On the top and sides of the altar, there are green wavy lines painted between the red borders. There are two pieces of leather nailed to each side of the altar and to the sides of the doors, as hinges. The exterior of the doors are painted with one half of a flower each and with blue vines emerging from its sides. Above the opening of the altar, there is a triangular piece of wood affixed, creating a peaked roofline on the façade, painted yellow with a green half-sun motif. Each of the interior doors is decorated with a two-petal flower. Inside the altar, the side walls are painted dark blue and the back wall is painted yellow with silver stars. Standing against the background are Mary and Joseph, bothey both wearing gold crowns and gesturing to Jesus in his cradle in front of them. The baby is naked and his cradle is red. Also in the background, right of Mary, a person in a red robe stands with their hands clasped in prayer. Left and in front of Joseph, there is an angel that holds a gold horn to his mouth. Left and in front a man in a blue shirt kneels and prays as he looks upon the baby. Right and in front of baby Jesus, a man wearing a gold cap, blue cape and yellow robe kneels and prays, as well as a grey animal with pointed ears that crouches and clasps his front hooves in prayer. In front of the angel, a man wearing a gold cap, red cape and yellow robe kneels and prays and to his right is a boy with black hair and a red cape praying. A woman to the right faces the child while she kneels and prays. Right of the woman, and in front of the praying animal, there is a patch of yellow grass in which a yellow-white bird stands. In front of the man in the gold cap on the left side of the altar, there is a goat standing left of a yellow-white, four-legged animal and a small brown camel to its right, and than a sheep, and a striped llama(?). A grey donkey with a satchel on his back stands right of the llama. In the foreground on the left side of the scene, there is an orange and black striped animal, a pink and black bird and a brown spotted dog. In the furthest right position in the foreground, there is a small brown and black four-legged animal. There is indecipherable writing in orange pen on the back of the object. On the bottom of the object, the wood is unpainted.

Retablo Altar2903/12

Altar containing three-dimensional figures set upon two tiers depicting heaven and earth. The exterior of the altar is painted yellow-white with red borders. On the top of the altar, a blue curlicue design is painted over top the yellow-white background. There are also curlicue designs on the sides but they are red. The doors of the altar are attached with two pieces of leather nailed to each side. The exterior of the doors are painted with a large flower that is split in half by the doors. The centre of the flower is yellow with a red cross-hatched design over top. Around the centre, there is a ring of small, pink flower petals. There are also grey, blue and purple petals. Above the doors, there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the façade. The triangular piece is painted yellow with a red border and a red flower. Each of the interior doors is painted with a flower; they are grey, red and blue with yellow centres. The figures within the altar are made out of plastic. In the top tier against the back wall, there are three haloed figures holding quills and books. In front of these figures, there are a variety of smaller people. Many of them are holding instruments. There are also small figures of goats, rams, owls and other four-legged animals. The background is painted yellow-white with red, grey, yellow and blue spots over top. In the lower tier, there are four figures attached to the back wall; they carry out various everyday tasks. Below, there are smaller people playing instruments, carrying babies and caring for animals. There is also a tall yellow and red table with a pitcher, a cup, a bottle and a round fruit atop it. The animal figures appear to be dogs, cats and birds. On the back of the object, there is a number written in red pen. Also, there is a piece of tape with a number written on it in blue pen.

Candlestick Holder2903/20

Ceramic candlestick with nativity scene in the base and three candle holders, covered with many different colours of wax. The central holder is open at the base so that wax has dripped onto the nativity scene below. In front of each candleholder is a red rosette in relief and a red band winds around the circumference of each candleholder. They are connected by two sets of horizontal arms painted yellow-white with brown detailing. The arms below are curved, creating a rounded hollow between each set of arms. The curve at the end of these arms suggests the form of hands. There is a cross-hatched pattern in pink-grey over a background of yellow-white painted on the front of the curved arms. In the centre is a motif of red and blue bisecting vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. The 'hip' of the candlestick is opened to create a semicircular cavity, framed by a blue and yellow-white scalloped design around the upper portion. The bottom of the opening is framed with red cross-hatching and inside is a nativity scene. The virgin Mary wears a pink-grey dress and a brown cape with yellow-white trim and holds her palms together in prayer. Joseph has a beard, a red shirt, brown pants and a yellow-white cape and his hands are positioned upward. The child is painted pink and reclines on the floor between them. Also on the floor is small lamb painted yellow-white with brown and red detailing. Extending from the bottom of the object there are yellow-white oval shapes, with faded red detailing on the left and right sides.

Portable altar with a three-dimensional depiction of peasants in love. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white with red borders. On the left, right and top sides of the altar, there are purple leaves painted over the background. The doors of the object are attached with two pieces of leather per side; the leather pieces serve as hinges. There is a large painted flower split between the two doors. The centre of the flower is a grey base with red cross-hatching over top. Above the doors, there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the façade to create a peaked roofline. The design on the triangular piece of wood is faded but a cross-hatched flower centre remains visible. There is a flower painted on the interior of each door. They are grey, purple and red with cross-hatched centres. There are three vultures flying above the three-dimensional scene inside the altar. Two of them are attached to the top wall and the other is attached high on the left wall. The vultures are black with red beaks and red plumes atop their heads. One of the vultures has a black lamb in its talons. There are faint clouds and mountains painted on the back wall of the altar. The ground has hills and valleys formed from clay. On the left side of the object, a brown and black striped donkey sits atop a hill. In the foreground in front of the donkey, there is a cave under which two small animals sit. On the right side of the altar, there is a tall hill on which three birds are perched. There are many animals sitting and standing within the scene; there are lambs, bulls, rams and donkeys. Near the middle of the scene, towards the background, one animal rests atop another animal’s back. Behind these two, there is a man and a woman. The woman, on the left, has a grey hat, two black braids and a pink skirt. Her hands are upraised as if she is dancing. Her partner stands to the right; he wears a red coat, grey hat and plays a guitar. There is another couple right of the musical one. The woman is lying with her back on the ground and one of her legs revealed. Her lover wears a red coat and black pants and is stooped over her. The artist’s name and location are written on the back of the work in blue paint.

Retablo Altar2903/4

Portable altar depicting the Spanish conquest. The exterior walls of the altar are painted white with pink borders. On the side walls are purple curlicues. There are three pieces of leather nailed to each side of the wall and to the side of the doors as hinges. One half of a flower is painted on each of the doors. Above the front doors of the altar, there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the façade, creating a peaked roofline with a pink cloud-like motif and a black dot painted on it. On the interior of each door there is a narrow flower with two large petals and four small petals and purple vines. Inside are two tiers with part painted in various shades of blue and white to resemble the ocean and part yellow and orange to resemble sandy ground. Also in the background, there are three wooden sailing ships embedded in the back wall of the altar, adorned with red crosses. On the top tier, the ships from left to right are dark brown, orange and light brown. On the bottom tier, the ships from left to right are orange, light brown and dark brown. An elaborate throne rests with its back against the left wall on the top tier. A king sits in the throne so that his profile is turned towards the viewer. The king has long black hair, mustache and beard. He wears a gold crown, long orange jacket with white trim, and an ornate green robe with a white pattern on it. He holds a gold pointed sceptre in his left hand and points with his right hand. Right of the king, there is another throne with its back against the back wall of the altar. A queen sits in this throne. She wears a gold crown, white and black hood, orange jacket with white trim and an ornate red dress. She clutches her sceptre in both of her hands. On the right side of the altar, there are relatively small people standing amongst tall grasses and a palm tree. The small people are purple and wear loinclothes and white and black printed headdresses with orange feathers attached over the forehead. One of them holds a young child in her arms, another points towards the ships in the background. In the lower tier, a conquistador stands on the left. He wears a silver helmet, orange jacket, pink and black robe and holds a long silver axe-like weapon in his right hand. To the right corn and pineapples are shown growing out of the ground. Standing amongst the grasses, there is a man in purple, larger than the people on the top tier. In his left hand he holds a light brown pipe and a parrot rests on his bent elbow. In his right hand, he holds a bow and arrow. A yellow and black monkey hangs from his right arm. The artists name and location are written in dark blue paint on the upper left corner on the back of the object.

Retablo Altar2903/14

Portable altar with movable doors. The walls of the altar are painted yellow-white. On the top and sides, there are green vines with coloured flowers painted over the yellow-white background. The exterior of the doors, on the front of the object, have a large flower split between them. The doors are bordered with a red line and have abstract yellow patterns in the corners. There are also four green leaves protruding from the flower. Above the doors, the façade of the altar extends into a peaked roofline. It is painted yellow with grey curlicues and a grey cross. Inside each of the doors has one flower on it, with red petals outlined in yellow. The top and bottom petals of each flower are long and thin while the side petals have a more rounded shape. There are green vines flanking the petals as well as four green leaves. The doors open to reveal many figures inside of the altar. The opening is bordered by yellow edges. The interior is painted light blue with purple borders around the back wall. The largest figure, God the Father, is in the background of the altar. He has curly grey hair and a grey beard, wears a large yellow crown, red shawl, yellow-white robe and holds a yellow sceptre. His hand that is not holding a sceptre is upraised with the index finger pointing upwards. Below him there are smaller figures of people and animals. On the left side, near God’s feet, there is a man with a mustache and goatee; he wears a red hat with a white band around it. On the right side there is a man with black hair, mustache and goatee who holds a yellow bushel. Between the men, there is a yellow-white ungulate with horns and a red saddle strapped to its back. In front of the man in the orange hat, on the left side of the altar, there is a woman wearing a pink shawl, yellow blouse and green skirt carrying a large satchel over her shoulders. Next to her is a man with long black hair and mustache who wears a red and black striped tunic and green pants, and is holding a red bow in his left hand and a yellow mandolin in his right hand. Right of the musician, there is a large pile of yellow grains. A grey fox or dog drapes its body over the pile. Right of the grey animal there is a woman wearing a pink hat, yellow white shawl and grey skirt. She holds a yellow basket and has a baby strapped to her back. In front of the woman in the pink shawl, there is a rooster with a brown body and red feathers on its head. A small figure of a man is placed in front of the rooster. He wears a black hat with a white band around it, a yellow-white shirt and red pants. He holds a rope over his left shoulder. Next to this man, there is a brown bird. Right of the brown bird, a sheep reclines on all fours. Next to the sheep, a yellow and red bird raises its beak to the sky. A yellow white parrot with a pink beak and feet sits on the furthest right in the foreground. On the back of the altar, the artist’s name, date of the work, location and number in a series are written in pink paint. There is also a piece of tape with a number written in blue pen on it. There is a metal eye hook in the top of the object.

Plaque2903/17

A ceramic plaque in high relief depicting Christ and a cow. Around the perimeter of the work, there is a painted, decorative border; in the top left and bottom right, the border is red with black curvilinear lines. The red wraps around the corners. In the top right and bottom left, there is a red triangle in each corner and one on either side of the corner. The rest of the border is painted yellow-white with a pattern of red and black lines. The ground on which Christ and the cow sit is red and has clusters of short black lines to represent grass. Unlike the rest of the image, Christ and the cow are in relief. Christ perches on the cow’s body with a book open on his lap. He wears a baggy robe. There are red and yellow haloes around Christ and the cows’ heads. Christ’s halo seems to extend around his body or he wears a red and yellow cape. The cow has brown spots on its body and has horns. Near the top of the plaque, there is a hole through the ceramic for hanging. On the back of the object, there are three pieces of tape with writing on them. One piece has a hole with a grommet that corresponds to the hole through the plaque.

Portable altar containing a depiction of the Holy Week Procession in Ayacucho. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white with red borders around the edges. On both side walls, there are faint grey squiggly lines. Two pieces of leather are nailed to each of the side walls and to the sides of the doors; the leather pieces serve as hinges. The exterior of the doors are each painted with a red, purple and orange flower. Each flower has two long petals with undulating sides and two small purple petals. The centres of the flowers are orange. Above the doors, a triangular piece of wood is attached to the façade to create a peaked roofline. There is a faint black, brown and yellow motif painted on the triangular piece. The interiors of the doors are each painted with a flower. The flowers each have two red petals and two purple petals. The left and back walls inside the altar are painted purple. There are white stars or fireworks painted over the purple backdrop. Attached to the backdrop, on the back wall, there is a small plastic figure of an angel with purple wings. Below the angel, also attached to the backdrop, there is a figure of a praying woman. On the lower right side of the back wall, there is a plastic figure of a man playing a guitar. Left of the praying woman, ascending from the ground, there is a tall structure formed from thin black beams. The beams meet in a dome-shape at the top of the structure. Attached in various places to the structure, there are three yellow and red bundles. A woman in a purple shawl and red dress stands in front of the structure with her hands clasped in prayer. Her baby is strapped to her back. Next to her, there is another woman in an orange shawl holding a yellow and black striped object. Right of this woman, there is a large white platform with many candles attached to it. The candle flames are red and the platform is decorated with gold patterns throughout. The platform also has various white and gold pots attached to it. A figure of Jesus stands atop the platform. He is wearing a red sash, is surrounded by a gold halo and holds a gold flag. Right of the platform, a man with a mustache holds a yellow and black tuba. In front of the woman in the purple shawl, there is a man in a round-collared yellow robe holding a staff with a vase-shaped object atop. Next to him, there is a man in a dark blue robe, red and black striped cape and red, black and yellow crown. The man wearing the crown holds an open book in his hands. Next to him, there is another man in a round-collared robe holding a staff. Behind him, a woman carries her baby on her back and clasps her hands in prayer. Right and in front of her, there is a woman in a red shirt and yellow and black cape; she also clasps her hands in prayer. There is a child next to her, wearing a yellow shawl and skirt and purple shirt. Next to the child, there is a man in a yellow shirt, blue tie and blue pants. A small boy stands next to him. Behind the man and the boy, a musician with a thin mustache plays cymbals. Next to the cymbalist, a man in a blue and black striped outfit holds a candle in his hand. A small boy also holds a candle to his right. The artist’s name is written in green paint on the back of the object. Two numbers are also written on the back of the object, one in red ink, the other in pencil.
