Backstrap LoomE164 a-h

A loom (parts a-g) an unfinished woven wool textile consisting of blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, red and white central stylized geometric designs surrounded by a repeating, multi-coloured square border all on a navy ground. The textile is attached at the top and bottom to a large, cylindrical shaped wooden stick (part a). Intertwined in the multi-coloured warp are two cylindrical shaped heddles, one covered in red and white twine (part g), the other in navy twine; a flat, rectangular batten with triangular, pointed ends (part d); one cylindrical shaped bar with indentations on the ends (part e) and two long cylindrical shaped sticks of various size (parts f and h). Separate to the loom is a hollow cylindrical shaped shed roll (part c) and the rectangular shaped brown, leather back strap (part b) that has large loops of twisted twine ties on either end.

Human face mask painted black with red curly cheeks, lips, and nose. Appears to have been gessoed before painting. Eyes are cut out with red eyelashes above and black eyelashes below. Hair is carved with vertical grooved lines and is upraised above the face.

Ikat Textile1786/3

Long, rectangular, woven textile with bands of alternating colours which repeat regularly. There is a red and orange short thread fringe on both end and a cotton label is machine sewn at one end. The label reads: ‘Quiche, 100% wool, made in Guatemala’. Some bands of colour have a metallic-like gold thread woven into them. The textile is pink, red, orange, yellow, green, black, blue and purple.

Paneled blouse or huipil with decorated t-shaped bodice and back; rounded neckline. Panels are continuous over the shoulders with seams on the sides and two seams front and back. Central panels is brown with cream side panels. Decorated portions are vertically ribbed and decorated with green leaves, pink and white flowers with blue, yellow and purple detailing on a dark red ground. Around the scoop neck is a pointed scallop-shaped trim in dark red-brown and orange chain stitches with circles on each shoulder. Border of down pointing chevrons at sleeve openings and v-shapes along bottom. Black straight stitched hem for one half panel, brown for another; centre selvedges at hem, others raw.

Sash with a multicoloured embroidered repeating design depicting various figures and geometric shapes on a dark red ground. A repeating row of paired off-set white stitches forms a border along the weft selvedges. The figures and other design elements include scroll edged medallions, an upright figure with a double plume on its head, diagonal double lines with a small flower at the base and a parallel line with perpendicular lines crossing.

A three-piece glazed pottery coffee pot with curved bands of blue, green, and brown. The first piece (part a) is a rounded pot with spout raised out with three holes on pot surface, flared rim, and handle opposite spout, from below rim curving up and out attaching at centre with a straight-walled base. The second piece (part b) is the filter section, cylindrical above rim, tapering slightly below, and below rim is partially unglazed (white-orange). The bottom of the filter section (part b) has numerous small holes, and inside is unglazed at holes (orange). The third piece (part c) is the lid with knob at top, sloping to flared edge, straight-walled to bottom, and inside partially unglazed (orange).
