Mask3326/14

Kpelie mask carved of stained wood. Long oval female face that tapers to a point at the chin. Round projecting mouth exposes teeth. Arched brows form a continuous crosshatched pattern across the face. Long slender nose with slightly bulging slit eyes. Face marked with concentric diamonds symmetrically flanking each side. Two sets of fin-like projections extend from each side of the face. Emerging from either lower side of mask are two tapering, oblong projections. Central rosette crest surmounting forehead symmetrically flanked by bull horns. A small bird with head down stands on the crown. Mounting hardware attached to back - two eye hooks and a red wire.

Rhythm Pounder3326/15

Rhythm pounder. Wooden female figure with long curved legs and feet standing on a small domed base. Short arms hang at sides. The figure wears a bracelet on each wrist, an arm ring on each upper arm, one band below the breasts, and two bands at the waist with a cloth hanging(?). There are incised crosshatched designs on the face, shoulders, arms, breasts, quadriceps and pregnant belly. The face extends out from the neck, and hangs down. The face is long and oval shaped with heavy lidded eyes and a serrated mouth with a flat back. Perched on the head is a rodent-like animal with its tail dangling down behind the figure. The shape of the human figure's head mimics that of the rodents. The ears sit high on the head, and are folded back.

Bronze mask. Chin is pointed, with a small, protruding mouth showing several teeth. Small legs(?) emerge from the sides. Cheeks are hollow between a narrow nose and long, square ears, with large rimmed eyeholes above. Brow is heavy, with defined eyebrows. A snake slithers down the long rounded forehead between two large, flat, curving horns. The interior of the mask is hollow. Object is covered with green corrosion.

Bronze mask. Face is broad, with a wide mouth open to show a row of even upper teeth, chin covered by a full beard, rounded cheeks, and a wide nose with thin bridge. Small well defined ears protrude from the edges of the mask. Eyes are rimmed holes set far apart, below an inclined brow. A crown sits on the forehead, with three protruding cones to the front, and three wire triangles at top. Brow, nose and beard are embellished with a zigzag design. Interior of mask is concave. Object is covered with green corrosion.

Carved wooden mask. Face is long with a pointed chin, widening toward the rounded forehead. A ridge runs the length of the forehead and meets the bridge of a sharp nose. Lips are rectangular and protrude. Eyes are narrow slits cut through the wood, inset, and framed by delicate lids and brow. Diamond shapes are carved into the forehead and cheeks. Two small legs(?) are connected to the chin, large rectangular ears sit alongside the cheeks, and large, wide horns curve above the forehead. The back of the mask is concave.

Twin mask. Carved from wood, two long faces sit side by side, with three small legs(?) below, large rectangular ears alongside, and rounded and lined headdresses above. Between the headdresses stands a hornbill(?) bent over with beak between its legs, wings tucked to its sides. The faces feature pointed foreheads, closed eyes, long thin noses with sharp bridges, and pursed lips showing teeth. Small beards protrude below the mouths. The back of the mask is concave and coloured dark red-brown.

Ornament2960/31

Large gold coloured portrait ring. The ring itself is squared, large, with a join line running horizontally through the metal and visible on the interior as well as the exterior. To the front of the ring is welded a face, slightly convex; imitating a Senufo mask. The snout is square, with a slightly open mouth at the bottom. The nose is wide and protrudes. Eyes are protruding circles, closed. The head is rounded, and arching above it are two long thin curving horns that almost touch, each of which has incised horizontal lines on the front.

Figure of a standing female. The face and head are narrow side to side and wide front to back. The jaw is square and sharp. The mouth is small with a wide nose narrowing toward the brow. Eyes are shallowly carved, cheeks are well-defined. The ears are large inverted U-shapes that protrude from the sides of the head. The hair at the forehead comes to a large point. The figure’s neck is long, shoulders broad and flat. Arms bend slightly and hands are held palms to the front. The breasts are large, conical, and point forward. The stomach distends slightly, with a protruding naval. The buttocks are large and pronounced; knees are bent so that the figure is in a slight squatting position. Feet are placed flat on a small circular base. A pattern of lines is barely discernible on the torso. The figure is covered with a dark brown paint.

Mask2960/14

Carved wooden face mask topped by curved horns. The face is flat with a narrow rounded chin, widening toward the forehead. The mouth is small with protruding lips and a hole bored through the centre. To each side is a set of raised horizontal lines. The nose is wide at the nostrils and thin at the bridge. A diagonal line decorates the cheek to each side. Eyes are closed with wide curved slits as viewing holes. The brow is decorated with cross hatching. A raised line sits between the browns and extends to the top of the head, between two large, concave, inwardly curing horns that are ridged at bottom, smooth at top. Along the sides of the mask are four differently shaped protuberances, oval, rounded, square with horizontal lines, and leg shaped with ridges at the bottom. The interior of the mask is hollowed out, and has a set of evenly placed holes around the outer edge.
