Mask3387/3

Large kifwebe mask carved with striated designs. The striations are painted in alternating colours, reddish-brown, black and off-white. The eyes, mouth, and nose extend outward, with a large fan-like crest extending back from the nose, between the eyes. The eye lids are semi-circular at top, with a rectangular cutout below. The mouth piece is rectangular, with a square cutout at the end. A neck covering extends down and flares outwards. Many small holes are drilled through at the edge of the mask. The back is red.

Fly Whisk3321/15

Fly whisk with carved wood handle, copper decoration, and tail of hair. Handle carved to represent a kneeling female figure with marks on her abdomen and shoulders. The figure has a very elongated face with cowrie-shell shaped eyes. Below the figure is a rope-like copper covering over the section where the hair is attached to the handle.

Very large wooden mask. Face has a pointed chin with three nails emerging slightly from tip. Mouth is small and protruding, positioned in a smile, with shallow gouges along lower lip and lightly carved teeth inset. Nose is large and flat, wide at nostrils and narrowing toward forehead, between small rectangular holes cut through the wood for eyes. Ears are large protruding half circles inside the upper jaw line. Top of mask is rounded with a flat top. Many holes are bored through the rim, set at somewhat equal distances.

Mask3123/20

Wood mask. Wide incised strips have been carved diagonally over the face and in half circle patterns across the forehead. These have been filled with white lime, creating a striped pattern. From a squared chin, the face flares slightly toward the wide, rounded forehead. Down the centre of forehead is a line that meets the nose, and off of which are carved the eyebrows. Nose widens toward bottom. Eyes are thin slits cut through the wood, with large rounded eyelids above. Mouth is a protruding cube, with lime colouring the centre. Around the edge of the mask are bored five small holes, similar in size, evenly spaced. The back of mask is concave and undecorated.

Light brown wood carving of a figure. Has a rounded head tapering to a flat triangular chin. Carved with slit eyes, a nose, and an open oval mouth. Long cylindrical neck. Has genitalia. From the squared shoulders the thin arms are resting at the sides, bent at the elbows so that the hands are resting just to the sides of the belly. Standing on short, slightly bent at the knees, legs upon a circular base.

Axe with copper-covered wooden handle with a rounded top and flared butt end, and a steel crescent-shaped blade with three supporting arms. The middle arm of the blade has four faces in low relief. The handle has indented decoration of small dots and two large circles.

Nkisi figure made of wood. Figure stands on a round platform with knees slightly bent. The arms are bent at the elbows, with both hands placed on a protruding abdomen with an empty hollowed-out space at centre. Each elbow is wrapped, and the right wrap contains a bird foot. The skullcap is raised, with a single horn mounted to the crown. The eyes are narrow slits, with wooden pupils, and the open rectangular mouth has four wooden teeth. Hanging from the pointed chin is a strip of reddish-brown hide. The long neck, waist and ankles are all wrapped and coloured a reddish-orange. The body is heavily decorated, notably on the face and chest.
