Container2960/38 a-b

Small cylindrical container (for tobacco?). The body is tall and narrow, delicately and densely carved in encircling patterns of triangles, swirls, leaves, and geometric and liner designs, in a dark brown colour. Both bottom and top of cylinder are painted a dark reddish brown, with a lacquered shine. The inside is hollow with thin walls. The lid has a round bottom that fits snuggly inside the cylinder, with a top that protrudes beyond the rim and a small round handle at centre top. Small triangles are carved into the outer edge of the lid.

Sarong2787/20

Wedding sarong (tapis). Two panels of hand spun, natural dyed cotton are stitched together with a long centre seam. The edge at one end has a folded hem, the other edge is finished with a basting stitch. Hand loomed cloth has stripes of red, brown and yellow with mirror work and embroidery embellishment.

Long silk shoulder cloth (selendang). Dyed, using plangi and trikit resist technique, to produce a red ground covered with white squares, some large and filled pink, green and purple star bursts, others small and filled with red, green and/or yellow, all within a double white lined border.

Textile with a batik pattern and a dark brown fringe at both ends. The centre of the textile has a geometric pattern on purple ground and this is surrounded by a dark brown floral pattern with parallel lines at the ends, all on an orange ground. The long edges are finished with handmade gold thread edging.

Three pieces joined together with seam. Large image of open watercraft, with decorative embellishments at prow and stern, in blue. Figure in centre is blue, with four smaller figures in blue and red below. Repeated watercraft motifs, alternating in red and yellow, with figures in red, yellow, and blue below large image; watercraft also above large image, in red with blue insects(?). Two red scorpions also above large image. Border of red, yellow, and blue waves along both selvedges. Blue scroll pattern on one end, figure shapes on other.

Red Batak textile with light brown geometric background pattern. Parallel mottled yellow stripes down centre, with one row white stripes on either side and a solid light brown border along edge. Ends have woven bands with diamond shapes, and red and yellow edges. Fringes at ends.

Rectangular, woven textile with a fibre fringe on both ends. The bottom of the textile is undecorated while the top has of a brown woven lozenge pattern band followed by a fringe which rests upon another brown, geometric pattern band which also has a fringe. The two fringes overlap each other and are knotted in sections. The top edge has two small sticks of wood running through.

Skirt763/3

Striped skirt with gold stitching. The stripes are red, orange, black and white. The orange stripes are thin and grouped in threes. The red stripes are thin and flank the wider white stripes. The white stripes have gold stitching in a diamond pattern. The black stripes have gold stitching in a triangular pattern. The skirt is made of two pieces of cotton fabric sewn together down the centre. There is one cut edge, two salvage edges and one hemmed edge. There are metal hook and eye closures sewn in three of the four corners.
