Chilcaht [i.e. Chilkat] cartridge case", which seems to refer to this object.Shgen George, weaver, made the following comments during the Tlingit Recovering Voices Community Research Visit, March 13-March 24, 2017. This object has a design of a bird with wings. This is meant to be worn around the waist, and the top has been sewn shut.

From card: "9/28/66 Examination of accession records indicate that this specimen was associated with a 'shaman' grave examined by McLean near Sitka." From 19th or early 20th century exhibit label with the card: "Hand drum of the Tlinkit Indians ... Shell, a hoop of wood; head, of skin, soaked, stretched across the hoop, nailed to the back, having on the inside the figure of a bear in red and black. Thongs cross the hoop on the inside. Diameter, 24 3/4 inches. Collected, 1884, by John J. McLean."

FROM CARD: "STICK ARMOR. WOVEN WITH SINEW AND WOOLEN CORD, 73 STICKS. ROD ARMOR:--COMPOSED OF 72 PEELED RODS OF UNIFORM LENGTH AND DIAMETER, HELD IN VERTICAL SERIES BY ALTERNATE BANDS OF WEAVING OF WOOLEN AND SINEW CORD. THE RODS ARE BUNCHED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BAND. THE ENDS OF THE RODS ARE NEATLY HOLLOWED OUT, FORMING CUP CAVITIES, AND THERE ARE FOUR EQUIDISTANT VERTICAL BANDS OF RED PAINT. THIS BAND WAS PROBABLY WORN WITH A SKIN COAT, BOTH SPECIMENS HAVE BEEN SECURED FROM THE SAME NATIVE. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO DEVICE TO PREVENT THE ROD BAND SLIPPING DOWN. IN USNM AR, 1893; PL. 13, FIG. 640."Similar to E168157 (see remarks for that object), this Taku Tlingit object may originate with the Taku Tlingit of the Upper Taku River area of British Columbia.
