From card: "Though the accession papers give no clue as to which village these came from, Mr. H.W. Krieger had indicated they were from Sitka. (basis for information unknown.) In Acc. 41,185 in a letter dated 12/7/1903 Dr. Dorsey, who collected these items, says that he knows of no other similar ones which have ever been taken from Alaska, and that at that time there are not more than half a dozen left in the territory. Therefore rare. This is one of the two unpainted specimens. Carved. One of a pair. "Immense hewn slabs of cedar, handsomely carved. xxx in practically perfect condition, owing to the fact that they are inside house-posts, and consequently have never been exposed to the weather." Anthropology catalogue ledger book identifies them as from Koutznow [i.e. Hutsnuwu people, which was transcribed on the catalogue card as Kountznow's], Chatham Strait, Alaska. Prince of Wales Island has been written on the artifacts themselves by the museum cataloguer and added to the catalogue cards. For E20875, Prince of Wales Island has been crossed off the catalogue card and Kootznahoo Inlet has been written over the culture name. The catalogue entry on this object in "The Far North" exhibit catalogue, assumed the object was Tlingit, probably from Admiralty Island from the vicinity of Angoon, and identifies motif as bear.

Accession file identifies original #99 as 1 fish line made of spruce roots, and two Halibut hooks from Klawark [i.e Klawock] village. The fish line was given catalogue # E20888 and the two halibut hooks were given # E20889. Apparently during cataloguing, only E20888 was identified in the ledger book and catalogue card as Tlingit from Klawock; this information was not listed, apparently in an oversight, for the halibut hooks. The culture/locality information for E20889 has now been been changed to match E20888.

IN SOME EXAMPLES THE HANDLES ARE MADE FROM THE HORN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN GOAT. IN SOUTHEASTERN ALASKA, IN CANADA, AND THROUGHOUT THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION OF THE UNITED STATES, THE HORN OF THE MOUNTAIN SHEEP IS USED IN MAKING DOMESTIC UTENSILS. THE HORN OF THE GOAT ALSO LENDS ITSELF TO THE CARVER'S ART, AND BY THE TLINGIT INDIANS IS CARVED AND ENGRAVED TO REPRESENT TOTEMIC IDEAS." (NOTE: THIS LABEL APPLIES TO 60,135-60,141; 10,389)."
