Model Totem PoleA2537

Walrus ivory model pole carved from a tusk, with three figures: a raven, a human holding a knife, and a human holding a fish in his mouth. All figures have circle in tapering oval eyes with a split u brow above. The raven's closed beak curves downward with the claws below. The side wings have an ovoid in ovoid along the upper portion while the lower portion has a pair of split u's with a u form that has an oval within. Both humans are in crouching position. The human in the middle has a closed mouth and the knife has a profile head finial at the end of the handle. The human on the bottom has an open mouth showing six upper teeth, with the tail of the fish in his mouth. On a square rounded base.

Wooden carving of a woman lying on the back of a sea monster(?); she is shown nude, lying flat on her back with knees slightly raised. She has a labret in her lip. The creature's body is divided into three segments. Its head is painted black with red nostrils, the eyes are round and green, and the gills are well defined and delineated. The tail is black and split, with yellow and red concentric circles at each corner. A circular space has been carved out of the wood under the creature's head.

Round, closed two-strand twined basket with lid. Straight-sided, very finely woven. Approximately every 6th element in every 6th row is red (warp of same grass dyed red, otherwise yellow-green). Bottom of basket is coarser and darker red/beige. Blue band, a single element wide around bottom edge. Lid (b) rim is reinforced by cedar bark band. Red 'dot' pattern on lid, same as basket. Two small holes near bottom centre.

Open, round cylindrical shaped basket, open twining on bottom and in alternating double row sections on sides, with rows of cross warp sections (3 sets). Top section is decorated with double row of black wave-like twine. One aspect of basket side, twining between open-work slants diagonally, interrupting the otherwise parallel lines. Rim, two strand twined; with twisted loops along top. Inside unfinished ends at rim and centre bottom. Two strand thread interwoven along rim.

Construction consists of two separate pouches on a long back piece which folds over and covers. Design consists of horizontal bands where each of the bands is proceeded by a change in weave. Plaited checker work, loose twine weave and openwork "eyehole" weave - crossed-warp twined. Colours include green and natural browns.
