FROM CARD: "PEOPLE: **CHILKAT-SITKA? REMARKS: *COMPARE TO 'SLAVE KILLER' #67826 AS A CLUB HEAD FRAGMENT. **9/30/66: THIS SPECIMEN DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE LISTED ON THE ORIGINAL MCLEAN INVENTORY (NOV. 9, 1881) THAT PROVIDES SPECIFIC PROVENIENCE FOR EACH ITEM. GEP."
FROM CARD: "ILLUS. IN USNM AR, 1888; PL. 36, FIG. 184; P.314." Identified in publication cited above as twined wallet (i.e. bag), Chilkat Indians, Alaska, from W. F. (William Fraser)Tolmie. Note that Tolmie's last name is mistranscribed on catalogue card as Tolnie. Anthropology catalogue ledger book lists both Tolmie's and George Suckley's names as source of this object but also identifies this object as probably part of George Suckley accession # 126 for the year 1859, so Tolmie may be the collector who Suckley acquired it from, probably circa 1855 in Washington Territory?
From card: Wooden, painted."This object has a partially obscured glued on label inside. It is a label from the Sheldon Jackson Insitute. See E260339 for an example of an object with a full extant label of this type, the text of which says: "Sheldon Jackson Institute, An Industrial Training School for Indian Boys and Girls, Sitka, Alaska."
Accession file identifies original #94, Catalogue No. E20881, as a canoe bailer from Koutznow [i.e. Hutsnuwu people]. Anthropology Catalogue ledger book lists locality as Admiralty Island, Alaska.
FROM CARD: 67876-84. NOS.67881-2-3 PIPES. #67882 - ILLUS. IN USNM, AR 1888, PL. 48, NO. 269; P.322. WHERE IT IS DESCRIBED AS IN SHAPE OF AN INDIAN DOCTOR."
FROM CARD: "ILLUS. IN THE FAR NORTH CATALOG, NAT. GALL. OF ART. 1973, P. 239. LOAN R. H. LOWIE MUSEUM 12/31/64. LOAN RETURNED FEB 15 1966."Ilus. Fig. 5 p. 11 in King, J. C. H. 1979. Portrait masks from the Northwest Coast of America. [New York]: Thames and Hudson. Identified there (p. 10) as "Tlingit shaman's mask. The hair, eyebrows and moustache on this mask were made from fur and nailed into place; it has copper eyes and lips. Although the face is extremely realistic, it probably represents a spirit who would have helped the shaman cure the sick and predict events. It was held to the wearer's head with a hide strap."
