This object is on loan to the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, from 2010 through 2027.From card: "Roll of native woven s[t]uff covered with windings of bark cord in two shades forming triangular figures. Tsimshian celebrants danced in cedar-bark rings, imitating the dress and actions of beings who were described in the origin story of each secret society. Bark rings were hung outside on the houses where ceremonies were in progress, to warn away the uninitiated. This ring consists of several crossed layers of twisted bark cord wrapped around wool; the sash is made of twisted bark cords, each ending in a knot and tassel.

ON THE BACK IS A HUMAN FIGURE IN RELIEF WITH A FROG ON HIS BREAST. EATING HIS TONGUE. THE TAIL OF THE BIRD REPRESENTS THE HEAD AND BEAK OF A BIRD. PAINTED RED, GREEN AND BLACK. USED IN THEIR RELIGIOUS DANCES."
Provenience note: collection apparently purchased or collected by McLean in Sitka and vicinity circa 1884.

WIDE BORDER OF DARK GREEN; 15" WHITE FRINGE ON BOTTOM. THIS SPECIMEN PURCHASED IN JUNEAU ALASKA BY MRS.
