Basket3000/39

Rectangular plaited basket. Base is wide, curving up into tall, straight walls, with bottom corners defined. Top portion is in a loose ‘x’ weave with a tight rim that rolls outward. Decoration is several horizontal lines of dark brown and red imbrication, in sets of two.

SS Glad Tidings Crossing Wrights Sound3000/8

Drawing in charcoal, on thick paper. The image is of a boat and small canoe caught in a storm, large waves crashing, while a beam of sunlight appears at the top right corner. Three figures are visible on deck of the boat, which is identified in writing below the image as the S.S. Glad Tidings.

Bentwood Chest3000/22 a-e

Painted bentwood box. Rectangular box is painted on all sides with images of animals and faces in black and red. Two of its corners are reinforced with metal plates attached with nails. The front panel (part b) is detached and shows an oval face at centre, with hands at the sides, possibly wearing a headdress? The face is embellished with metal studs along its perimeter, mouth, and nose. The box is attached to its base by long metal nails. Parts c, d, and e are fragments from the front panel.

Spoon2999/2

Small painted wooden spoon. The handle is carved into the shape of a fish, with a brown painted fluke and a small dorsal fin. Painted-on designs are side fins, dorsal decorations of lines and dots, the jaw line and mouth. Large teeth have been carved and emphasized with red paint. Small round eyes have also been carved and painted dark brown. In its mouth the fish grasps the bowl of the spoon, which is carved of the same piece of wood. The bowl is thick in the centre and thin at the edges and is undecorated. This spoon is carved in a light hardwood.
