Mask1373/73

A dark wood mask with an oval face. There are three grooved semi-circles around the top with two protrusions that round upward and point backward and outward. The semi-oval eyes are cut out with slits underneath, carved with eyebrows and a long thin nose, and a small oval mouth. The cheeks have an a quadrangle carved outward. The sides have an upside down L-shape carved outward with a set of three protruding grooves above and a vertical rectangle in the middle of the forehead. The rim of the mask is perpendicular to its edges and decorated with a triangular design carved out. Behind the rim is a wide frame. The mask is on a mount.

Bottle1060/56

A cylindrical reddish-brown skin bottle with three circular protrusions around the top, middle, and bottom which are decorated with bark weave in a diagonal line pattern. Each of the two spaces in between these three circular protrusions has a set of two horizontal black lines painted at each edge. The top of the bottle is semi-round with a triple black line semi-circle design and tapers to a neck which has strands of skin flowing down from the rim. The round lid which also has a bark weave in a diagonal line pattern is attached to the bottle side from the top of the lid.

Whisk1060/69

A long cylindrical skin handle with circular protrusions all around that have some plant fibre weaving decoration. The top end of the handle has a looped skin band painted with red dots connected by a brown zig zag line. The bottom end of the handle flares out with skin strands from which grey hair flows down.

Drum1373/45

Square-shaped drum with white skin that has been stretched over a light brown coloured frame and stapled at the sides. On the reverse, the drum frame has a cross-piece section in the centre that is secured with two nails and has a secondary wood frame inset into the outer drum frame.

Bottle1060/58 a-b

Long and narrow bottle covered in red-brown leather (part a). Body of bottle has four distinct ridges that are decorated with light brown, dark brown, and red coloured woven leaf bands. Neck of bottle is decorated with brown fringe. Large leather label on body with inscription in bold letters says: "LEATHER ENCASED BOTTLE GAMBIA-AFRICA." Part b is the cork stopper to the bottle, has a decorative band of woven leaf fibres around the top and is attached to a long strip of leather.

Musical Instrument1373/25

Round, brown helmet-like object with a u-shaped carved branch mounted on its top, creating an antler-like appearance. Four strings are strung from one side of the branch to the other--tied at one end, threaded through small holes and tied to coloured beads at the other end. Brown and black string is wound around the base of the branch where it is attached to the helmet-like base.

Mask1373/38

Oval-shaped mask with a slightly wider head. Head of mask is decorated with carved grooves and geometric designs. Forehead has six slightly raised bumps in the centre and a raised U-shaped design lower down on the forehead. Ears are located just above the eyes to the side of the mask. Eyes are crescent-shaped cut-outs, nose is raised and slightly rounded at the tip, and has two holes for nostrils. The mouth is rectangular-shaped with rounded edges. On either side of the mask on the cheek and chin there are a series of three raised lines. Around the perimeter of the piece from the chin to the ears are punctured holes with fibre threaded through them. The rim on the back of the mask is lined with skin backing.

Mask1373/14

Long black coloured oval-shaped mask with carved diagonal grooves on head, five raised ridges in centre of head, and curled swirl at the top of the head. Face of mask has crescent-shaped cut-out eyes, protruding nose with carved nostrils, and small rectangular-shaped protruding lips with five line marks on either side. There are three protruding pieces on side of the face, the lowest piece being the longest. There are punctured holes around the perimeter of the mask starting from the hair line down around the chin. A small raised diamond-shaped is in the middle of the forehead.
