Gift of the Estate of Alice M. Kaplan
Small figurine carved out of reddish-brown felsite with the typical Olmec drooping-lipped face. The figure also has features of an animal such as a cap with feline ears and a long, bushy tail at the back, both suggesting that he is wearing a costume of an animal, perhaps a jaguar. The figure has two small drill holes at the eyes and at the downturned corners of the mouth.
Purchased with funds given by an anonymous donor, Frank L. Babbott Fund, Carll H. de Silver Fund, Frederick Loeser Fund, Carl S. Smith Memorial Fund, Ella C. Woodward Memorial Fund and Alfred W. Jenkins Fund
Museum Expedition 1938, Dick S. Ramsay Fund
Hollow, ceramic sculpture of a standing human figure with hands at sides and wearing an elaborately ornamented tunic and headdress. The tunic is decorated with a repeated double tusk-like motif in relief, cross-hatching, incised lines simulating fringes, and a bead-like border. A plain breechcloth is visible below the tunic. The double-flap headdress, over an elaborate coiffure, is decorated with the same applied motifs. The figure wears large nose and ear rings, and arm and leg bands. Traces of yellow and green pigment are visible over the entire piece, and there is a large opening in the top of the head. Condition: Excellent, except for some losses in the applied borders and ornaments.
