Ledger Book Drawing1992.27.1

The ledger drawing scene shows a Native man on a charging horse, clubbing a soldier with a tomahawk weapon. The Native (possibly Cheyenne) has on decorated leggings; his hair wrapped with an elaborate headpiece with a whole bird on top of his head and a flowing trailer alongside of it . The soldier, caught between the legs of the horse, wears a blue army uniform and brandishes a pistol. There is the outline of a wagon in the lower left. These drawings are done by tearing out paper from ledger books that were used by army and reservation post managers as a substitute for using hides- the traditional medium fro such drawingsfor offical art papers.

Pair of Moccasins11.694.9035a-b

Pair of moccasins with totally beaded blue and red thunderbird designs. According to Sean Standing Bear, (Osage) 10/20/2000, a non-Osage person might have made these because the birds are positioned upside down. Osage design dictates indicate the birds would point skywards.

Bear Feast Bowl05.251

The object is a bent-corner, box-shaped feast bowl having a bear's face with protruding tongue on one end and its tail on the other. The second face on the bear's tail is a visual pun. The object is in fair and stable condition. Although the wood appears to be extruding oil in some areas more than others, the wood is stable. There are several minor cracks on two of the sides of the bowl which are stable. Previous repairs to the side corners remain secure. The join on through the large face where a break was repaired appears firm and stable. According to Robin Wright, Burke Museum, April 16, 2003, this is not Haida because the eye socket lines run right out to the lips of the bear, which is distinctively Tlingit. She added that if the Tlingit still owned the piece, they would have cleaned up the oil and darkened color.
