Two pieces of wood tied together and carved to represent the body of a bird and having a handle carved out of the same two pieces. The upper portion depicts the head and wings of the bird, the lower portion the breast. The stylized designs on the upper and lower portions are painted in red, black and turquoise. Marks: written on rattle, "by Edward Very, Ex Ex". Note: This object was also listed as a decoy duck and with the collector Edward Verry's name spelled "E. Very" on one of the shipping lists. Two pieces of wood representing the body of a duck without the legs, and having a wooden handle; the upper piece shows the wings, head, etc.; the lower shows the breast; both are hollowed out, the rattles are put inside, and the two fastened together by small leather ties. Painted with stripes and figures of black and dull green on the dark-brown wood. Item has one old hole in it. Loan: Denver Museum 3/15/65. 4/18/67 loaned to Vancouver Art, Gallery, returned 12/13/67. IN SOME EXAMPLES THE HANDLES ARE MADE FROM THE HORN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN GOAT. IN SOUTHEASTERN ALASKA, IN CANADA, AND THROUGHOUT THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION OF THE UNITED STATES, THE HORN OF THE MOUNTAIN SHEEP IS USED IN MAKING DOMESTIC UTENSILS. THE HORN OF THE GOAT ALSO LENDS ITSELF TO THE CARVER'S ART, AND BY THE TLINGIT INDIANS IS CARVED AND ENGRAVED TO REPRESENT TOTEMIC IDEAS."

FROM CARD: "DESTROYED. JUNE 7, 1973 THIS MASK WAS NUMBERED T-656 FOR SEVERAL YEARS DURING WHICH TIME IT HAS BEEN CONCLUDED THAT THIS IS THE DESTROYED WILKES MASK. THE MASK EXHIBITS THE EFFECTS OF THE 1865 FIRE IN THE SMITHSONIAN BUILDING. SOME FARSIGHTED EMPLOYEE APPARENTLY CHOSE NOT TO DISCARD IT DESPITE ITS CONDITION."Attributed to U.S. Exploring Expedition/Wilkes collection on the catalogue card, however Jane Walsh doubts that attribution.

FROM CARD: "MADE OF PINE. THE BODY IS CIRCULAR, THE BACK AND BELLY ARE BOTH FLAT AND OF THIN WOOD. THE SIDES ARE VERTICAL, OF A BENT PIECE OF WOOD. THE NECK IS RATHER LONG, THE FINGERBOARD ON THE SAME PLANE IS THE BELLY. IT HAS 5 GUT FRETS. THE HEAD IS BENT BACK FROM THE NECK AND FITTED WITH 3 VERTICAL TUNING KEYS. THERE IS ALSO A HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE NECK 10-1/2 IN. BELOW THE NUT WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN USED WITH A SHORT STRING, BUT IT IS PLACED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE NECK. THE TAIL PIECE IS A SHORT STRAP OF LEATHER. IT IS PIERCED WITH FOUR HOLES FOR STRINGS. THE STRINGS AND BRIDGE ARE MISSING. THE BODY IS SIMILAR TO THE CHINESE MOON GUITAR, WHILE THE NECK RESEMBLES THAT OF THE BANJO, THE UPPER END OF WHICH IS BROKEN."
