MaskE 1911.25

A very fine mask of a woman carved in wood with inlaid haliotis shell eyes and teeth with a labret in the lower lip. The mask has prominent black eyebrows, a shapely nose with incised nostrils, the eyes are inlaid with discs of haliotis. The maskhas stylised ears which are painted red, and the open mouth has one remaining piece of haliotis, and the lips are also painted red. The mask has elaborate asymmetrical face-painting designs in black and pale blue. Part of the face-painting appears tobe fin-like and stretches across the nose and one cheek, having a cross-hatched portion and an eye. The upper edge of the mask is slightly damaged.; Good

Three horn spoons. A: Back of bowl carved as well as handle. Bowl attached by copper rivets.B: The dark spoon has a decorated handle with a curved bowl afixed to the base of the handle by two small rivets (Alaska 1892). The handle is composed of possibly a human figure (the head as been broken off) holding a spear-like object. This figure is standing on a frog which in turn is seated on the head of a beaver. The bag is rectangular, white and shiny with a thin red band along the opening. The bag is made from narrow strips of seal intestine sewn together with thread. There are eight strips on either side of the bag. The seams between the strips show traces of white feathers and red and green wool decoration.

Spoon that has a small bowl with a long handle flattened at the butt end which has an incised design of a bird near the tip. The bird's head is in profile facing downward along the lower portion of the upper end of the handle. Bird has a circle in tapering oval in ovoid eye with a curved beak. Four pinched rectangular designs incised in decreasing size down along the lower portion of the handle from the beak. Has a two-feathered side wing and a four-feathered tail. Word 'SKAGWAY" is scratched on the back of the bowl.

MoccasinsA2.497 a-b

The moccasins (part a and b) have soles, red skin and beadwork around the toes. The soles are light brown and wrap part way up the sides. There is brown fur sides and white fur around the foot opening. There is a strip of red skin around the toes decorated with white and dark blue beads. Above the strip is a circle of beadwork rings in dark blue, light blue, white and red.
