Mask (a) with a heavy brow, protruding eyes and cheeks, large flared nostrils, and pursed lips. The mask is painted with black, dark green, dark red, and medium red with white lines and curvilinear designs. The mask is surmounted by a duck figure with wings extended and a duckling on its back (b). The duck figure has a green head with black glass eyes and a red mouth. The duck figure's neck and wings are articulated, and the mechanisms are hidden from view by white fabric that has been painted with designs in black, blue and brown. The duckling and the body and wooden segments of the duck figure's wings are painted with designs in green, red, blue and black.

From card: "Half of an old box top, the front portion laid with the different teeth of a sea otter. Such pieces are very old and are greatly prized by the natives who upon occasions of ceremony and the distribution of property, present them to the more honored guests as gifts."Emmons talks about this artifact in his letter of May 28, 1902, written from Victoria, B.C., filed in the accession file. He identifies it there as from the Blunden Harbor [sic] Kwakiutl.

From card: "Mask of wood - from Blunden Harbor, on the mainland coast of British Columbia, S. W. of Segmom Inlet, the Kwakiutl people. It represents a wolf's head, and was worn upon festival occasions." Mask has movable eyes and lower jaw.

From card: "Carved in crouching position. Neat work. Teeth, eyes, nose and brow inlaid with abalone shell. Painted red. Short bands."Though catalogued as #5 in the collection, and just assumed to be from Alaska, this object is actually #6 on the detailed list filed in the accession record. This list describes it as: "Ceremonial club, from Blunden Harbor [sic, this is Blunden Harbour, which is in British Columbia, Canada], the Kwakiutl tribe, the property of Chief Seaweid [a.k.a. Siwid or Seaweed]. It is carved as the head of a wolf, ornamentally painted and inlaid with haliotis shell. It was used to charm the salmon + halibut back or to bring them in the spring, or when they went fishing and failed to make a catch. A fire was built and they would take the halibut hook a[nd] char the end over the fire, and the club was used as a wand during the feast and dance."Listed on page 42 in "The Exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, California, 1915", in section "Arts of the Northwest Coast Tribes".

Bentwood box and lid made of cedar wood. Nailed at front and bottom. Lid has upstanding ridge on one side. Box and lid tied with cedar bark ropes in the traditional position. Front is undecorated except for one deep vertical undercut on the left side. Sides are decorated with varying sizes of plain rectangles, and ones with carved horizontal lines. Back of box has two chevrons, one plain, one with carved horizontal lines, then a solid triangle on bottom, and carved horizontal lines above top plain chevron, all within a rectangular border.

Cedar bentwood box. All four sides are made from a single cedar board. Board is scored, steamed and bent into three right angle corners. The open seam is nailed together. A separate cedar board is nailed on for the bottom. Three sides are decorated with pattern. Long side has incised rectangle with carved horizontal lines. Short sides identical, having also incised rectangle, but inside is divided almost in half, with larger side of carved horizontal lines, and the other a plain rectangle which also has horizontal lines above and below it.

Large, carved, wooden, raven hamatsa mask with a long beak, an ovoid shaped projection on the ridge and thin, ovoid shaped cutout nostrils. The beak is hinged with pieces of leather nailed to either side. The beak is painted black with a red mouth and nose. From the edge of the mouth to the back of the nose are a series of red u-forms ending in a split u. At the back of the mouth are two white u-forms. The bridge has white and red detailing. The eyes are white, outlined in black and red, on a white ovoid shaped background; brow is black. The inside of the mask is hollow with the exception of twine used to open and close the beak. The top has short pieces of cedar creating a fringe, while the back has longer strips that hang over the wearer. The bottom is black with a white U-form. The mask is painted black, red, and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.

Large, carved, wooden, hokhokw mask with a long beak and circular cutout nostrils. The beak is hinged with pieces of leather nailed to either side. The beak is painted black with a red mouth and nose. Along the front end of the beak are ten, white, incised U-forms. At the back of the nose are two large black and red U-forms followed by smaller red and white split U’s outlined in black. The eyes are white, outlined in black and red, on a white, ovoid shaped background; brow is black. The inside of the mask is hollow with the exception of twine used to open and close the beak. The top and side edges of the mask are lined with braided cedar. The top has short pieces of cedar creating a fringe, while the back has longer strips that hang over the wearer. Intertwined in the cedar are a few feathers. The bottom has crooked beak depicted with black and white eyes, red and white mouth and a protruding, crooked beak. The mask is painted black, red, and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.

Wooden, carved, raven mask with a long beak with round, cutout nostrils. The beak is hinged with pieces of skin on either side, nailed to the lower mouth. The beak and nostrils are painted black with white and red edging; orange split "u" design extends from the nostril to back of mouth. The eye is outlined in black and red on a white background; eyebrow is black. The head of the bird is flat with cedar bark fringe on top and along the sides. The inside of the mask is hollow.
