Model Racing CanoeA1534

Miniature canoe carved out of cedar wood with wolf's head finial on one end. Six unfinished cross-bars support the canoe, which is painted red on the inside with darker red on the inner and top of the gunwale, dark green on the outside with a band of lighter green on the outer gunwale, and white at the ends.

Wood paddle with an expansive design on both sides painted in black on brown. Design consists of an ovoid in tapering oval eye with a split u in front. Underneath, there is a pair of red u forms and a pair of black u forms. Behind this, there is a split u within a larger u form that has a plain ovoid within. Below, there is an ovoid in ovoid with three talon-like features. The tip of the blade has a solid black u form.

Wood paddle carved with a low relief-design, which is dominated by eye and foot or claw elements-raised portions painted in black and brown. Design consists of a black ovoid in tapering oval eye in ovoid with a split u at either side; a pair of black u forms and a pair of u black forms below; a four digit claw-like feature with an ovoid in ovoid behind; a black panel at the base of the paddle; and a black split u at the tip of the blade.

Small wooden paddle painted red, black, and white. The front side of the blade has a creature in the mouth of another. The main creature has a black oval in white tapering oval eye surrounded by a red-outlined ovoid, an open red mouth showing ten white teeth, and a red and black dorsal ? fin behind. The creature in the main creature's mouth has a black circle in white tapering oval eye with a red crescent line behind, a black nose, and an open red mouth showing multiple white teeth. A black diamond shape is at the tip of the blade. The back has three black diagonal lines across the blade with 'Port Simpson . B.C.' written in black along the handle. The handle has a horizontal cylindrical finial.

Coiled cedar root basketry cradle. Cedar roots are coiled over slats. The top half, at the widest end, is beaded in a checker work design of three upper slats separated by a black horizontal line of cloth. The bottom half is beaded in a geometric design in red and yellow. The top row is imbricated in black cloth and white grass.

Birch bark body of basket bent and laced into place with birch twig stitched border around the rim. Overcast with natural, pink, purple aniline dyed root. Zig-zag stitch for joining creates a portion of the design. The overcast stitch is zig-zagged. The dyed root occurs at the ends with bands of natural root on the sides. Darker side of the bark is on the outside.

Part (a) Urn shaped coiled work (bifurcated stitches) basket with handles at shoulder and foot at base. Watch-spring lid and base construction; lid with 2" diameter hole in centre, indented slat flange. Imbricated pattern of alternating vertical rows of arrows in either dark cherry and cat-tail grass, or red cherry and cat-tail grass. In between these rows is a smaller row of diamond shapes of red cherry bark and cat-tail grass. Part (b) Lid - 6 double tiered diamond figures in cherry bark and cat-tail, alternating red/cat-tail and black/cat-tail.
