New Day3590/1 a-b

Painted drum (part a) made of stiffened skin stretched over round wood frame. Skin wraps around frame edges to the back; thin strips of sinew looped through holes in skin draw material tight. Sinew strips lashed together in centre with leather thongs; black looped cord attached to leather, for hanging purposes. Face of drum has bird, fin and sun motifs painted across surface, made up of formline design elements; done in dark blue, gold, and dark red. Artist signature and date made painted along side of drum; done in red. Drum rests inside separate square wood frame (part b) with tall walls (Metal hooks and wire in interior and on back of frame, for hanging purposes).

Painting3574/1

Northwest Coast imagery painted on a doubled piece of large, rectangular burlap. The image background and facial details are in red, with a vertical dark blue border along the edge of each side. There are four main faces, with round copper buttons for eyes. The bottom section has one of the larger faces, with a dark blue canoe in profile above the centre; then two smaller faces side-by-side in the middle, with two rectangles above, each with two small faces detailed inside; then another larger face at the top, with three dark blue copper shapes above it. The unpainted areas of the faces are natural light brown jute. There are two small white plastic buttons sewn on near the lower left corner. The piece is made of two pieces of burlap folded over at the top and sewn together, using the same jute fibre, along the sides, with the bottom left open. The back is unpainted, with a large Royal Coffee stamped logo in the lower half.

Thunder Bird Dance Masks3546/1

Painting on paper depicting two Thunder Bird dance masks; shown in profile, facing one another, and tilted upward. Both have curved beaks with nostril cutouts, thick ridges along their tops, cedar bark fringe extending from the back and bottom edges, and two U-shaped wings along the backs. Underneath the masks are the sides of a Thunder Bird dance cape, designed to look like wings; four feathers on wing underneath left mask and three feathers on wing under right. Mask on left has U-shaped horns and a ridged tongue; mask on right has curved horns and a smooth mouth. Masks and cape elements are decorated with formline designs; done in black, gold, red, dark green, orange, blue, and light green. All cedar bark is painted gold, orange, and yellow. Title and artist signature written in pen along bottom edge of painting. Additional numbers written in corners on front and back.

Thunder Mask3547/1

Thunder mask. Wooden humanoid mask, with bulbous forehead and pronounced brows. Deep-set eyes, with edges carved in relief, are over a large hooked nose, with wide oval-shaped nostrils. Nose extends over open mouth with two rows of bared teeth; rounded chin juts out below mouth. Trigons are carved into cheeks; ovoids done in relief overtop of brows. Forehead and chin are painted black; brows, nose and cheeks are painted dark blue. Ovoids, trigons and nostrils are done in red; teeth are done in silver. Brows, nose and eyes are highlighted with silver. Additional silver decoration painted along bottom corners of mouth, extending down chin. Both dark blue and silver paint have a metallic sheen. Holes drilled into sides and along top edge of mask, for attachments. Back of mask is hollowed out. Holes in mask for eyes, nostrils and mouth.

War canoe dance - Canoe Paddlers mask3546/2

Painting on paper depicting war canoe dance. Two figures stand in foreground, facing one another, and holding upright paddles. Large canoe in middle of painting with a flying bird motif along side. Canoe is being paddled by five people; sixth figure, wearing a feathered headdress, stands at the bow with a spear. Directly behind the canoe is a large masked figure. All figures are wearing a variety of neck rings, wristbands, headbands, belts, and button garments. Formline design motifs throughout scene and figures; done in black, green, blue, red, gold, and brown. Title and artist signature written in pen along bottom edge of painting. Additional numbers written in corners on front and back.

Vase3514/1

Squat vase with cut-out and raised decorations covering outer surface. Circular body has a flat shoulder and round opening, with a straight lip. Around shoulder there is an alternating cut-out pattern of large circles and medium circles framed with smaller circles. There are channels carved around the circles, creating curvilinear motifs across the shoulder. Wavy lines, done in relief, circle the sides; horizontal lines incised in negative space between waves. Vase is brown-red with green glaze throughout. Foot and base are undecorated; artist signature incised on base.

Square Vase3517/6

Grey stoneware vase with a square cross-section; opening is circular with a straight lip. Shoulder is flat; edge curves over, forming a raised border along the top of the body. Similar raised edge sculpted around base. Wavy channels carved along sides, forming vertical rectangular panels around vase. Straight horizontal channel carved two-thirds down the sides, forming a plain band around the bottom section. Black speckles throughout glaze; base is undecorated. Maker's mark stamped on base; tags attached to base.
