Daoist album leaf. Painting depicting Xu Xun and the roaring of a command to the wind and thunder. A male figure in red and gold robes with a blue border is standing at the top of a hill with another male figure in green robes and has a sword stuck in the ground beside him. A group of three male figures is standing to one side, and a group of four men is kneeling to the other side. All are looking upwards at the sky where banners and swords are visible through parted clouds. There are green, blue and grey mountains depicted in the distance on either side of the hill. Cantonese Opera BannerN1.739 a-b

Pair of matching hanging panels (parts a and b); each consists of three pieces of embroidered cloth attached to a decorative wooden head piece. Head piece is straight across the bottom, scroll-shaped on top, made of wood painted rust red at back and sides, with silk glued and nailed to the front. Front of headpiece is covered with an embroidered silver butterfly motif on green ground with a large red circle; edge is outlined with pink ribbon. Suspended from head are three panels: a wide central one flanked by two narrow ones. Central panel: Chinese characters silver on green ground, appliqued (six circles). Butterfly, peach and gourd motifs, silver on red ground, blue edging; central panel finished at bottom with green knotted fringe. Side panels: peony motif, silver on red ground. Red cotton lining. Hole drilled in wood at top, with string loop for suspension.

Cantonese Opera FanN1.737 a

A shield-shaped fan made of cardboard with a heavy rolled edge of fabric supported by a wood socket and slat running up the centre back. The concave front has a main design consisting of a bird facing to its right on a peony tree among prunus motifs with turquoise, blue, black, pink, mauve, grey, and pale green bordered by tin reflectors, mirrors, on an ivory-coloured background. The top of the bird's head is blue, and the middle of its wings are purple. A golden bat is at the base with an attached deep pink tassel. The convex back has a printed rose design, 18th century style, on cotton.

Pink robe with wide extended sleeves, side slits, side opening and banded neck edge. On the front, back and sleeves are wave, coral, mountain motifs and roundels with dragon motifs in gold, silver and blue on pink ground. The collar band has a circular meander pattern in gold on pink ground. There are green glass eyes on the front, back and sleeves. Belt carriers have a flower motif in gold and blue on yellow ground stiffened with wood and adhesive. The inside lining is natural-coloured jute.

Cantonese Opera Transforming RobeN1.717

Reversible transformation robe (fan gongzhuang) with a stand-up collar, wide sleeves, side slits and a centre opening with brass frog fasteners. On surface A, the upper front, back and sleeves have phoenix, bat, cash, narcissus, chrysanthemums and peony motifs in silver, yellow, pink, purple and orange on a turquoise ground. The sleeve border has chrysanthemum motif in silver on a black ground. Below the waist the robe divides into overlapping multicoloured strips with canopy, mountain, cloud, chrysanthemum and narcissus motifs in silver. There are green glass eyes and circular mirrors on the front, back and sleeves. On surface B, the front, back and sleeves have crane, chrysanthemum and peony motifs in silver, blue, pink and yellow on a red ground. The collar, sleeve and border bands have a chrysanthemum motif in silver and blue on a red ground. There are green glass eyes, circular mirrors and tin reflectors. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.

Cantonese Opera VestN1.719

Long pink vest with tassels. The vest has side slits and centre opening with decorative frog closures. On the front and back is a poppy motif in blue on pink ground. The collar, centre opening, sides and bottom hem have borders of black and white geometric shapes on pink ground. There is a detachable border near the bottom with a wave motif in gold and silver. Along the bottom are knotted ecru tassels with flattened cardboard cylinder heads. Each head has a white Hsi motif on blue ground. There are many metal snap fasteners on the front and back. The inside lining is white cotton.
