Cantonese Opera RobeN1.710

Ecru robe with a round neck, tapered sleeves with hoof cuffs and a side opening with brass frog closures. There are slits in the centre front and back. The collar border has a gold peony motif on a red ground, edged with gold braid and pink trim. The cuffs have gold braid outside and black cotton lining inside. The robe lining is natural-coloured linen.

Headdress949/14

A headdress consisting of a rigid crown covered with blue cotton twill on the inside and red cotton on the outside. The outside is decorated with horizontal embroidered bands consisting of a pattern of red and blue diamond shapes. There is also a horizontal row of gold-coloured sequins, above which, there is a short horizontal row of silver-coloured flowers. Along the bottom edge, there is a red fringe. There are five vertical decorative elements consisting of a wool red, white, and green pompom at the top and dangling pendants of beads, tassels, bells, buttons, and shells. Another vertical element os a black cotton band with a cross stitch design which is attached across the inside of the crown and hangs down on the outside.

Black cotton jacket with white appliqué. The jacket has a standing collar, slender cuffed sleeves and centre opening with metal snap fasteners. The collar, cuffs and banding down the centre opening are white appliqué. The inside is unlined.

Daoist album leaf. Painting depicting the lingering evidence of transcendents in ascent. Two figures on a hill are reaching towards ths sky where the tips of ornaments on staffs can be seen amongst the clouds. Agricultural tools have been abandoned on the side of the hill and there are several mice or rats and black spots with an overturned container, an upright grey container and a red wheel floating in the sky to the other side of the image. A figure in red, gold and blue robes is holding a piece of white paper with several male figures gathered around him, some of which are holding a tapering white object, and some of which are holding weapons. There are four female figures, each holding an ornament on a staff, standing behind a table with a yellow object sitting inside a red and gold piece of fabric with radiating undulating multicoloured lines. Seven male figures are kneeling facing a vase on a pedestal. There are ornaments haning from staffs in both the foreground and the background, partially hidden by clouds. The painting is mounted on off-white damask-patterned silk on paper.
