Mask3573/4

Wood mask. Wide incised stripes have been carved vertically over the lower half of the face and in half circle patterns across the forehead. These have been filled with white creating a striped pattern. Down the centre of forehead is a ridge that widens and becomes the nose. Eyes are thin slits cut through the wood, with large rounded eyelids above and below. Mouth is a protruding cube, with white colouring the centre. Plant fibre is knotted to the chin, and hangs down. There are drilled holes spaced along the edge of the upper portion of the mask. The back of mask is concave and undecorated, with a black string tied to two of the holes.

Flat stomach, with stylized lizard incised across it, under small rounded breasts. Has pronounced buttocks and defined back muscles. Band of concentric diamonds done in relief across upper chest. Wearing bracelet, decorated with diagonal lines, on left wrist. Lines carved along edges of hands, imitating fingers. Figure has a wide nose, smiling mouth, and intersecting lines carved on each cheek. Eyes have holes drilled into their centres. Ears carved in relief and rest flat against head. Horizontal lines across entire top of head, imitating hair. Tall thin headdress forms an arch, spanning from forehead to nape of neck. Decorated with vertical lines along entire length. Hole drilled into remaining base.

Horizontal lines across entire top of head, imitating hair. Tall thin headdress forms an arch, spanning from forehead to nape of neck. Decorated with vertical lines along entire length. Feet rest on circular pedestal, drilled into square base.

Stool3455/1

Wooden stool in the shape of a four-legged animal. Figure has a long, thin face and oval-shaped ears on either side of its head. High ridge runs down centre of face, with semi-circular eyes incised on either side. Mouth is carved wide open. Bridle-like ring done in relief around muzzle. Band of braided plant fibre- coloured yellow, green and red- secured around animal’s neck. Long strands of matching fringe extend from bottom edge of band, covering neck and imitating a mane. Cloth strip tied around animal’s neck, as well as a long, light brown cord. Cord loops around body of animal, imitating reins. Saddle and girth carved in relief on back and stomach. Rings, done in relief, decorate each leg. Animal has a rectangular tail, that curves downward, and is covered in strands of red and yellow plant fibre.
