Mask3123/35

Bronze mask. Face is broad, with a wide mouth open to show a row of even upper teeth, chin covered by a full beard, rounded cheeks, and a wide nose with thin bridge. Small well defined ears protrude from the edges of the mask. Eyes are rimmed holes set far apart, below an inclined brow. A crown sits on the forehead, with three protruding cones to the front, and three wire triangles at top. Brow, nose and beard are embellished with a zigzag design. Interior of mask is concave. Object is covered with green corrosion.

Figure3123/26 a-b

Figure of a standing female. Woman stands squarely, large feet planted on a thick stand, arms by her sides with fingers straight. Large breasts hang from sloping shoulders. Her neck is thick, and face is carved with an open mouth showing small teeth, a large nose, and fine brows. Eyes are made from round nail heads. Ears are large and delicately carved with a piercing in the left lobe. Her hair, parted in the middle, is held back from a high forehead by a thin band carved with vertical stripes, while the top and back of her head are carved with diagonal stripes. Part b is a cowrie shell necklace that is looped several times around the figure's neck.

Carved wooden mask. Face is long with a pointed chin, widening toward the rounded forehead. A ridge runs the length of the forehead and meets the bridge of a sharp nose. Lips are rectangular and protrude. Eyes are narrow slits cut through the wood, inset, and framed by delicate lids and brow. Diamond shapes are carved into the forehead and cheeks. Two small legs(?) are connected to the chin, large rectangular ears sit alongside the cheeks, and large, wide horns curve above the forehead. The back of the mask is concave.

Carved wooden mask. Face is long and narrow, with a dark, pointed beard and tall hairstyle topped by a bun. Inner portion of the face is a light tan colour, with bulging eyes, a small, narrow nose, and protruding diamond shaped mouth. Two rows of small squares decorate the cheeks. The forehead and edges of the face are painted red, with a diamond shape carved on forehead at centre, and two small round ears protruding from sides. The back rim of the mask is large, unpainted, and carries two bored holes on each side and at top. It has been lacquered on the interior.

Wooden 'passport mask'. From a pointed chin, the face flares somewhat toward the wide, rounded forhead. Down centre of forehead is an embossed line that meets the nose, which widens toward the nostrils. Eyes are thin cuts through the wood, inset, and surrounded by a light grey mud. Mouth is open, showing metal teeth. Around the edge of the mask are bored many holes, deliberate and similar in size, unevenly spaced. Back of mask is concave and undecorated.

Wooden 'passport mask'. Face has a pointed chin, wide cheeks, and a rounded forehead that comes to a slight point at top, and is domed throughout centre. Eyes are small slits cut through the wood, surrounded by carved upper and lower lids, and slightly inset below the brow. The left angles down slightly at outer corner. Rounded ears protrude from the edges of the mask. An embossed line runs the length of the forehead and becomes the bridge of the small nose. Mouth is open, with protruding lips, showing several separated teeth in the upper row. The edge of the mask contains several holes per side, bored through the wood. Back of mask is concave and undecorated.

Carved wooden mask. Mask depicts a long face of a woman, with a long thin nose over protruding bright red lips. Eyes are nearly closed and brows sit close together over top. The lower face is yellow, while the forehead and nose are a rust-red. A large bird is perched on top of her dark brown hair. Its legs are white, body blue, with green wings that are tucked into its sides, and a long red beak connecting with the woman's hair. The inside of the mask is hollowed.

Twin mask. Carved from wood, two long faces sit side by side, with three small legs(?) below, large rectangular ears alongside, and rounded and lined headdresses above. Between the headdresses stands a hornbill(?) bent over with beak between its legs, wings tucked to its sides. The faces feature pointed foreheads, closed eyes, long thin noses with sharp bridges, and pursed lips showing teeth. Small beards protrude below the mouths. The back of the mask is concave and coloured dark red-brown.
