Coffee Pot3577/12

Clay coffee pot with spout. The neck is decorated with vertical lines of dots, and a single horizontal line of dots where the neck attaches to the body. It has a small pouring spout, and a handle where the neck connects with the base. The body is like two bowls attached together, creating a ridge around the middle. The base is flat.

Fly Whisk3577/11

Fly whisk. The handle is a short and relatively straight stick covered with woven back and yellow fibre, held together by orange stitching. At upper end is a long, thick hank of white horse hair, attached by a tightly woven panel fibre. Hair thins toward end of whisk.

Musical Instrument3577/10

Begena stringed instrument. Square-shaped resonator, covered with stretched rawhide, which is nailed in place. Triangular wood frame extends from top of sound chamber, made up of two arms inserted through the skin and connected at the top by a crossbar. The crossbar is rectangular on either end, with notches that the arms are inserted into, and a cylindrical centre where the strings are attached. The strings are fastened across the front of the sound box to wood pegs. U-shaped leather pieces placed between each string and the bridge.

Cape in a shiny bright blue fabric with small silver ovoid pattern all over. Semi-circular with triangle where the cape is sewn at chest. Five ties or flaps that hang down from the bottom edge, and two more ties where it closes at chest. Interior lined with a light green.

Scarf of white gauze with cotton borders along the short sides. The borders are woven bands in a bright blue background with concentric triangles around diamond centres. The diamonds are outlined in various colours of white, dark purple-red, orange and yellow. Short white fringe.

Lute3577/9 a-b

Masenqo or single-stringed bowed lute (part a) with bow (part b). The lute has a diamond-shaped resonator is made of four small wooden boards glued together, then covered with stretched rawhide, which is stitched together. The single string is made of horse hair, and passes through a wooden bridge. The hair is knotted to a large tuning peg. The bow (part b) is composed of a U-shaped piece of wood that has plaited plant fibre strung between holes at the ends of the wood, and then tied.

Rhinoceros skin shield. Large and circular shield of thick animal hide. The shield is covered with raised bumps, with a raised line across centre. On the reverse is a hard U-shaped hand grip at centre. (A small white cord has been attached along the edge for hanging.)

White gauze scarf with embroidered borders along either side. Borders are red and trimmed with white bands; bands decorated with black triangles. Three black patterned bands run along length of border. Two outer bands are identical and have four decorative gold stripes. In between stripes are gold and red dashes. Central band has two gold stripes through it, with white dashes in between. White twisted fringe on either end of scarf.
