Procession Cross3595/4

Elaborately carved metal cross. The upper portion is diamond-shaped with intricate carved out sections and incised lines. In the centre of the diamond is a cross, with a humanoid face in the centre. A black fibre string is tied around the top of the diamond. Below the diamond is a narrow rectangular section with incised lines, which connects to a square with rounded corners. A winged humanoid figure is incised into the centre of this square. Below is a smaller square shape with a rounded top and four sections carved out to make another cross. Two rounded and one diamond-shaped juts emerge from the sides of the square as an extension of the cross. The two squares also have incised lines.

Painting3595/65

Horizontal painting on animal hide depicting a nativity scene with four human figures. Three adults are crouched or kneeling around a baby wrapped in white cloth and laying on hay. Two adult figures on the viewer's left and right sides have yellow circles (halos) with red lines behind their heads. The baby also appears to have a halo. The adult figure in the centre of the painting does not have a halo, but there is black and red Ethiopian text above their head that extends to the right, above the halo of the figure on the viewer's right. Three small animal heads are located between the centre and right figures. There is additional black Ethiopian text below the left foot of the figure on the viewer's right side. On the back of the skin, there is a small numbered label written in ink on the lower right corner.

Vertical painting on animal hide, depicting four human figures. All of the figures are dressed in white, but three have additional coloured garments with yellow accents: top left, blue; bottom left, red; and bottom right, green. The top right figure is dressed in white only and appears to be clapping. The figures with coloured garments appear to be playing musical instruments. The figure in blue is holding a lute-like instrument; the figure in red, a harp-like instrument; and the figure in green, a flute-like instrument. The bottom two figures (in red and green) are sitting while the top two (in blue and white) are standing. There is Ethiopian text on the top and bottom right corners. The skin is outlined (except on the left side) by a thin red line. There is a small numbered label written in ink on the bottom right of the back of the skin.

Scarf3577/2 a-c

Shemma cloth scarves (parts a-c). Three pieces of finely woven, gauzy cotton of different lengths and widths. Each piece has panels of embroidery in brown and black, with diamond-shaped motifs in pink, white, yellow and red – alternating between patterns of concentric diamonds and a large diamond composed of four smaller diamonds. Scarf or shawl (part a) is composed of two pieces of white gauze, sewn along one long edge, with embroidered panels down the short sides, with short sparse white fringe. Long shawl (part b) of white gauze with wide embroidered panels along short sides as well as two panels near centre. Small shawl (part c) of white gauze with embroidered panel along one long edge.

Necklace3577/18

Double-ended silver pendant necklace. Two pendants attached by eight long chains, four on each side. Trapezoid shaped pendant has small 3D decoration at centre, surrounded by inset chain. Six metal cones hang from along bottom edge from short chains. Rectangular pendant is has filigree all over and 5 convex metal discs. Along the bottom edge, nine metal cones hang on short chains.

White gauze scarf, consisting of two panels sewn along the long edge, with cotton borders along the short sides. The borders are woven bands in a bright blue background with concentric triangles around diamond centres. The diamonds are outlined in various colours of white, dark purple-red, orange and yellow. White gauze scarf with embroidered borders along either side. Borders are red and trimmed with white bands; bands decorated with black triangles. Three black patterned bands run along length of border. Two outer bands are identical and have four decorative gold stripes. In between stripes are gold and red dashes. Central band has two gold stripes through it, with white dashes in between. White twisted fringe on either end of scarf.

Prayer Cloth3530/2

Long white prayer cloth decorated with vertical blue stripes; twisted fringe on either end. Blue stripes are trimmed with black lines. Wide blue band runs along left side of cloth, close to edge, with differently sized black stripes throughout. Edges and centre of blue band are embroidered with gold thread; embroidery forms a checkered pattern.

Baby Carrier3480/2

Goat hide baby carrier decorated with cowrie shells and trade beads. Carrier is rectangular with long, looped straps attached to the top corners, and shorter strands of hide extending from the bottom corners. Thin strip of hide tied through top straps, at ends. Exterior surface of strip is coloured red; front of hide carrier is red-brown, back is naturally coloured. Straps are covered in rows of alternating cowrie shells and dark blue glass beads. Fringe extends from the bottom edges of the straps, hanging overtop of the carrier body. Fringe is covered in white and dark blue beads. Upper half of carrier has a design of two square outlines. Borders made of rows of alternating cowrie shells and blue beads. Each square has a floral design in the upper corner, made of shells and beads. Hide tab underneath square motifs, with bead covered fringe along its bottom edge. Small cross, made of cowrie shells and beads, along bottom centre of carrier. Interior of carrier is undecorated.
