Dress Panel Textile1201/30

Densely embroidered square textile, stitched overall with meandering patterns worked in orange thread in chain stitch on a background of purple silk or cotton textile. The design field is divided into four equally sized squares, separated from one another with rows of narrow gold metallic braid. The textile is embellished with five large (4 cm) ornamental discs, made from several layers of black cotton textile, topped with a layer of red cotton textile and embellished with white cowrie shells, blue glass beads and white shell buttons; one of these discs is located at the centre of each of the four sides of the textile, and there is one in the centre. The textile is edged with blue and white glass beading on all four sides. The embroidery is backed with a layer of dark red cotton textile.

Hair Bag811/18

Long, flat, tapered, embroidered bag made of black cotton textile, embellished on one side with clusters of flowers, leaves and stems. The wide end of the bag is open and there is a 37 cm narrow loop of the same black cotton textile attached at either end of the opening. The closed, narrow end of the bag is embellished with bands of embroidery, sequins, glass beads and cotton fringe.

Embroidered and beaded wallet-style purse, long and narrow in shape, with a triangular flap at one end. The outside is embellished with panels of predominantly red embroidery representing flowers, leaves and vines, worked on a green fibre broadcloth background and edged with couched silver metallic threads. The wallet is edged with multi-coloured glass beads. The inside of the wallet is divided into two compartments, each closed with a flap, plus one long inner compartment that extends the full length of the purse. The embroidery on the inside is the same style as on the outside. The flaps are edged with multi-coloured embroidery. The compartments are lined with machine-printed textiles.

Small, flat, rectangular, embroidered bag, with beaded edges. Made by folding an embroidered piece in half and seaming two edges, leaving the fourth edge open. Three edges are trimmed with small multicoloured glass beads, while the opening is trimmed with small blue beads. The embroidery is worked in horizontal bands, separated by rows of silver braid and rickrack. The sides of the bag are virtually identical. The embroidery is backed with faded pink cotton textile.

Small embroidered and beaded wallet, made from red cotton textile, embroidered with dark yellow, orange, purple and grey geometric designs. The ‘body’ of the wallet is rectangular in shape which is intended to be folded in thirds, and one short end is extended to form a triangular flap. All edges are trimmed with bright blue and white small glass beads. The inside of the wallet has two compartments, one long and one short. The wallet is lined with red printed cotton and silk textiles.

Small, square, multi-coloured, embroidered bag, made by bringing three corners of a square embroidered textile together, leaving the fourth corner free as a flap, resulting in a flat, square envelope. The main design is a ‘hooked sun symbol,’ surrounded by a few mirrors and bands of embroidered geometric motifs and edged with couched silver threads. The embroidery is worked with multi-coloured threads in chain stitch on purple cotton broadcloth. The stitchery is backed with red cotton broadcloth.

Woman’s dress with multicoloured embroidered bodice front, very long wide sleeves, and very full, closely gathered, bright pink, embroidered skirt. The bodice front is embellished with a densely embroidered panel of floral forms and tree of life motifs in (predominantly) orange and dark red in chain stitch on maroon ground; appliquéd over the embroidery are four large, thick felt discs embellished with silver thread embroidery on red and multicoloured ground; two discs are located at the centre front and two are over the breasts. The bodice back is made from deep pink and white striped textile, pieced with solid colour cotton textiles, and is trimmed with small, simple discs made of blue felt. The front neck opening is trimmed with silver braid; there is a button and loop made of twisted fibre at the centre back neckline. The skirt front is densely gathered onto the bodice and is constructed from bright pink silk textile which is embroidered over-all with brightly coloured motifs, arranged in horizontal rows. The back of the skirt is pieced from panels of black, pink and white printed cotton textile and an embroidered pink silk textile that is almost identical to that used on the skirt front. The sleeves are also made from pink embroidered textile (but the right sleeve is pieced with a panel of plain pink), and the cuffs are made from wide bands of silver ribbon. Each cuff is trimmed with a felt disc which is embellished with silver thread embroidery.

Woman’s burqa, a long, flowing, overall body covering. The garment envelops the entire body, head to feet, and consists of a pillbox headpiece, a mesh facepiece and a full sack-like covering, embellished with embroidery and fine pleating. Extends to the hips in front and to the feet in the back. The mesh facepiece is worked in counted-thread openwork embroidery. An embroidered panel that extends to the hip area in the front is finely stitched with floral and geometric motifs. The back is finely pleated and is a darker green than the front. Two shades of dark green, with dark green embroidery.

Flat holster for a small pistol, constructed from silk textile, which is profusely embroidered on both sides in chain stitch with orange silk or rayon floss, using a meandering pattern. A large, multi-coloured, stylized sun or star motif appears on each side. The holster is trimmed on three edges with many small blue glass beads. Metallic gold braid is used to outline some of the motifs. The embroidery is backed with red cotton textile.

Set-in long sleeves; cuffs at wrist closed by plastic buttons (three on the right cuff, two on the left). Bust darts in front; vertical darts at the waist in back. Plastic coil zipper at centre back; slightly A-line.
