Head Cloth2615/5

Woman's synthetic machine printed head cloth. Red with diagonal cross-hatching pattern filled with double teardrop design in green, orange and white. Square, circle and abstract designs (including dove, floral, elephant and cross motifs) make up the centre of the hatching. Similar designs without the cross-hatching align the borders of the cloth. Teardrops excluded, all patterns are formed using tiny squares with red centred dots. Machine-edged white thread along the two shortest sides. Maker's mark watermarked along one side. Some irregularities in printing process.

Large rectangular turban cloth made from a gauze-like cotton fibre. Cloth is hemmed along two shortest ends, with a pink stripe around the border (several pinstripes added along shortest sides). Purple circular stamp mark and numerical(?) pen markings on one side. Vertical seam up the middle. Rough, uneven side edges.

Machine sewn lavender-coloured fitted shirt with flared bottom and elongated sleeves. The shirt has an upright collar with a series of sewn pleats. The front has a large left side pocket, and rough unhemmed bottom edges. The right side folds over the left and is secured to the collar and the base of the shoulder with a series of ties. Decorative swirl designs are sewn into the overlapping fold and on the back with white thread.

Woman's multi-coloured, embroidere, appliquéd. very full skirt with a wide (16.5 cm) waistband or hip band. The waistband or hip band is embroidered with three rows of large round mirrors and multi-coloured embroidery on red fabric. The top edge is finished with rows of coloured cotton bindings. The full skirt is finely pleated onto the bacnd and is constructed in six horizontal tiers. The tiers are embellished with embroidered geometric motifs and a few mirrors. ALong the front, where tha skirt joins the band, there is a row of small bead-trimmed pompoms, resembling bal buttons. The opening is at the centre back; there are long braided cotton cords (about 97 cm long) at the top corners. Two brass bells are sewn at the hem in the back.
