Wedding Dress3346/1 a-b

Two piece wedding dress, consisting of a jacket style top (part a) and skirt (part b). Open front jacket with a stiff high-necked collar, made entirely of black silk. There are small slits on the sides and one up the back. Jacket has three frog closures. On either side of the bottom closures there are decorated ties. The jacket is embroidered with gold metallic thread. On the front and back of the jacket there are blooming flowers and vines. Along the top edge of the collar, sleeve cuffs, bottom hem, edges of the slits and jacket opening there are two tiers of scallops and then wave-like designs. The interior of the jacket has a pink silk lining. Small purple tag on interior of collar with Chinese characters embroidered in gold thread. The skirt is four-paneled, full length and made entirely of red silk. Skirt is closed at the back, towards the right side, with four metal button clasps and a cotton tie that spans the waist. Hanging from the bottom hem are strands of twisted white gold metal. The front and back panels of the skirt are straight and the panels on the left and right are pleated. Like the jacket, the skirt is embroidered with gold metallic thread. The bottom hem has a two-tiered scallop border. Above the tiers on the front and back panels there are wave-like designs and then large flowers and vines. Running along the pleats on the left and right panels there are smaller flowers and vines. The panel edges are all bordered with two-tiers of scallops.

Jacket3346/2

Women’s dark blue jacket with small side slits and side opening with three pink frog closures. Top closure has an embossed metal button with a blue painted centre. Part of jacket covered by side opening has a small rectangular pocket. Pink frog closure at collar and another to the left of the neck opening. Dark blue portions of jacket have various plants and Chinese characters embroidered in a lighter blue thread. Sleeves are edged with three black bands that are bordered with thin white, light green and pink stripes. Next to the bands, pink and blue flowers are embroidered on a black strip of fabric. Bordering the black strips are light blue bands with white flowers embroidered on them. Around the neck opening the same pattern of bands span the entire collar. The bands are wider at the front, reaching towards the chest, and thinner on the back, reaching just below the neck. To the right of the side opening, on the chest, a pink spiral-like creature is embroidered. The plain black chest bands end to the right of it, while the bands with flower embroidery continue underneath it. The bottom of the jacket has a plain black band border. The band has a thin pink stripe at the bottom and white and light green stripes at the top. Above that band there is a thin black line. In the corners of the jacket, where the sides meet the bottom hem, the thin black line is woven into three linked loops. The interior of the jacket has a light blue cotton lining.

Cantonese Opera Robe3251/2 a-b

Robe is a vibrant pink, with long wide sleeves, and short water sleeves falling from each wrist. Collar stands upright, with lapel crossing over chest to tie at right side of torso under the arm. Decoration is thread embroidered flowers and foliage in dark green and blue embellished with translucent beads, applied around each wrist, on chest and neck, and both front and back across skirt. Interior of robe is lined in cotton. Stiff headdress (part b) is covered with the same fabric, and holds similar embroidery on front. Shape is squared with wide, scalloped rim at top that curls near the ears. Two long ties fall from the sides, each with an embroidered panel at bottom.

Deity Robe3251/1 a-b

Robe and collar worn by statue of three-eyed Cantonese opera patron deity, Hwa Kwong. Statue dressed in this robe would have been displayed on an altar. White robe has long sleeves, the right cuffed at wrist, the left with a water sleeve. Right shoulder has an added panel. Neck is small and rounded, and robe opens from the right side of the torso where it is secured with ties and metal snaps. Front is heavily decorated in colourful sequins, with three gold and red dragons at centre of chest, surrounded by curving lines in a variety of colours that continue onto the left shoulder, right shoulder-panel, and around back of neck. Bottom front is densely sequined in diagonal lines, and is lined in blue on the interior. Arms have curling lines in silver. Back of robe is undecorated but for a symbol in gold sequins. Collar (part b) is round, with ties at back to fasten it around neck. It is also heavily sequined, showing two gold dragons amongst colourful curling lines. Back is lined in blue.

A belt, decorated with floral designs of sequins in white and silver, that has a white lining. The belt is part of a costume with a blouse (2701/7 a) and a panel (2701/7 b).

Cantonese Opera Skirt2701/2 b

A skirt of shiny blue-green fabric decorated with sequins of darker blue-green and silver in a pattern of lotus flowers, stems, and leaves. It has two narrow front panels outlined in sequins that hang from a white cotton waist band with v-openings and ties at each side. The remainder of the skirt is pleated, and has a simpler sequin design along the bottom. The skirt is worn with a blouse (2701/2 a) as a costume.

Cantonese Opera Panel2701/7 b

Front panel with side ties, normally worn over a skirt, is made up of two panels attached to a white cotton band at the waist, the upper decorated as above and with long strings of beads hanging from bottom hem. Curlicues of sequins decorate edges of under panel and shorter strings of beads hang from the hem. The panel is part of a costume with a blouse (2701/7 a) and a belt (2701/7 c).

Cantonese Opera Skirt2701/4 b

A skirt of white synthetic fabric with silver and purple ornamentation that together with a blouse (2701/4 a) forms a costume. The skirt is full and gathered onto a waistband that is open at one side with long ties. It has an overskirt of filmy white fabric. Scattered over the surface are clusters of silver sequins in a tendril pattern. There are bands of purple and silver sequins in a pattern of irregular interlocking circles and a line of sequins near the hem of the skirt.

Cantonese Opera Blouse2701/2 a

A blouse of shiny blue-green fabric decorated with sequins of darker blue-green and silver in a pattern of lotus flowers, stems, and leaves. The blouse opens at the side and diagonally across the top to the collar and has metal snap-fasteners spaced along the opening. It has a high mandarin collar, long, tight sleeves, white lining, and a curved lower edge. The blouse is wrn with a skirt (2701/2 b) as a costume.
