Long rectangular finely woven textile. The background is black, with dark blue lines creating a subtle diamond pattern with five white dots where the lines cross. The motif features large flowers of various shapes, long fern-like leaves, and repeating small stars in brown, white and yellow. Both ends have a small band in gold. Small tag attached top right, 'B.E. BUSANA EDI'. Small, partially illegible stamp top left. Three small sticker labels adhered to textile.

Shadow Puppet2872/9

Shadow puppet of a 2 dimensional human-like figure riding a large mythical bird. The golden skinned figure has a black face with red markings, and long curling black hair. He wears an elaborate, colourful headdress and a robe around his shoulders that falls to his feet. Bracelets adorn wrists and ankles. In front of the figure sits a small green lizard. The bird Garuda has long blue feathers making up tail and wings, and small, delicate brown feathers on the chest. The eyes are red and staring, and a long snout displays many sharp white teeth. It stands on grey birdlike feet on floral grounding. The leather of the puppet is pierced with patterns of lines, holes and curlicues, which allow light to shine through. The whole is held up by a horn handle attached to the leather with fibre. The puppet is painted identically on both front and back.

Hand Puppet3155/1

Wayang hand puppet. The puppet, Un Kauw, has a human-like male head carved from wood, featuring sharp teeth emerging from below a pointed upper lip, a third eye on the forehead, two small faces protruding from behind each ear, and a small gold headdress perched on the receding black hair. Tall black boots are also carved from wood, as are the hands which are curved into fists with a hole bored through the centre. Legs are made from stuffed cotton, and the torso and arms of the puppet take the form of a cotton glove. The puppet’s robe has an upright collar, wide torso and sleeves, and a multi-paneled skirt hanging in front of the legs both front and back. The garment’s base colour is white, with heavy embroidery showing dragons, dragon scales, a butterfly at back, and decorative boarder motifs. The underside of the robe is lined with raw cotton.

Mask2872/8

Mask of a woman’s face, with all features carved rather than solely painted. The black hair is covered by an elaborate gold headdress. Long thin eyebrows sweep over small eyes emphasized with black paint, and eye holes are bored through the wood where pupils would be. Beneath a creased brow is a sharp, protruding nose, with bored nostril holes. The open mouth has thin, red painted lips and reveals top teeth. Two holes are bored through the sides of the mask at the edges, and one at the top centre. The interior of the mask is concave.

Mask with large, round pink and white eyes staring out of a pink face. Eye holes have been carved underneath the black pupils. Between the thin swooping black brows is a pointed protrusion. The mask’s snout contains a small round nose and a wide red mouth, with two large bottom teeth painted gold. A curling moustache has been painted on either side of the mouth, and a black patch is painted on the underside of the chin. A painted headdress covers black carved hair, with a pointed piece hanging down the centre of the forehead. The interior of the mask is concave and painted brown.

Mask of a bird face, with a jutting, pointed blue beak, pink mouth slightly open and red tongue peeking out. Eye holes are bored through the wood under the round pink and black pupils and a red comb sits between the eyes. The face is covered with painted feathers each in 3 shades of blue. A headdress surrounds the forehead, with a protruding carving of a small bird at centre just above the comb, and large decorated portions on the sides of the head. The inside of the mask is concave and unpainted with a gold sticker attached to the forehead area.

Mask2872/4

Mask of a woman’s face, with delicately carved features. The face has closed red lips, with small lines carved at each side of the mouth. The protruding nose has two nostril holes bored through the wood. Eyeholes are also bored, and sit directly under the pupils of long slanted eyes. The eyebrows are black and quite thick. A headdress decorated with up-pointing triangles covers the hair. The inside of the mask is concave and painted brown with a seal carved into the wood and painted bronze and red. Text has been carved above the seal.

Rod Puppet2872/31 a-d

Rod puppet of Irawan. The head (part a) has a white face with black painted features and a red smiling mouth. Green pompoms hang from above each ear. The black hair is topped by an elaborate headdress that includes a carving of the bird Garuda. The torso (part b) is covered by a black velvet bib with beaded decoration. A matching apron with peach coloured panels hangs from the waist, as does a long sarong, which hides a wooden stick (part c) that extends up through the torso and into the puppet’s head to control its movement. The arms, adorned with bracelets, are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand. The round, wood base (part d) has been painted white.

Rod Puppet2872/27 a-c

Rod puppet called Dewi Lambu. The wooden head (part a) has a white face with features painted in black, and a red mouth. The nose is sharp and protrudes, as do the ears. Green pompoms hang down both sides of her face. A large, pointed, colourful headdress covers her black hair. The gold torso (part b) is clothed in a beaded black velvet bodice with hanging panels and two long green ribbons. A sarong falls from the waist and hides a wooden stick that extends up through the torso and into the puppet’s head to control its movement. The arms are moveable at the elbows and shoulder by wooden sticks attached to each hand. The stand (part c, along with the attached torso stick) is a piece of raw unpainted wood attached to a square of plywood.

Rod Puppet2872/24 a-e

Rod puppet of Arimbi, a noblewoman, riding a horse. The woman’s head (part a) has a white face with finely painted features. She wears an elaborately carved headdress that includes an image of an eagle, over long curly hair. Her torso (part b) is covered by a black velvet bodice and cape and a printed sarong, and around her neck is a wide shoulder and back ornament. Her arms are adorned with bracelets and are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand. The puppet sits on a black horse (part c). The horse’s head can be moved slightly and it has real hair for mane and tail. The legs are moveable at the hip and shoulders, and it appears that a front and a rear leg have been exchanged, as two hooves point backwards. Through the horse’s middle is a hole through which a stick (part d) can be inserted that extends into the torso of the rider, holding the puppets together and controlling their body movements. The torso stick can be inserted into a large wooden base, which is painted black.
