Mask2872/2

Mask of a man’s face, with delicately carved features and decorations. An elaborate, many pointed headdress covers the black hair, and is painted with a variety of colourful designs and a bronze forehead band. A serpent head sits at each ear area. The eyebrows are fine and black above wide black eyes, with eye holes bored through the wood under each pupil. The nose is long and protruding with 2 bored nostril holes. The smiling mouth is delicately carved, and contains bronze teeth. Above is a small painted moustache. The interior of the mask is concave and painted a dark brown, with a red and gold seal and words of a script carved into the interior forehead area.

Rod Puppet2872/18 a-d

Three dimensional wood and fabric puppet representing a soldier. The head (part a) shows a nonsymmetrical face, with one eye closed and the other open wide with a red pupil. The nose is wide and slants down diagonally, and the mouth is open showing white teeth and long incisors, with a black moustache and beard. Wrinkles have been carved and darkened with black paint. The black hair is covered with a grey and gold cap. The torso (part b) is covered by a long sleeved orange and black tunic and a long white, purple and green skirt that hides a removable wooden stick (part c) which controls the movement of the head and connects the figure to its wooden base (part d). The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand, which are painted dark gold.

Rod Puppet2872/16 a-d

Three dimensional wood and fabric puppet of a horse and rider. The rider’s head (part a) has a white face with finely painted features, a red mouth, and a small patch of black hair siting above the forehead; the ears and nose are carved and protruding. The figure’s torso (part b) has shoulders and arms painted gold an an attached bodice and long skirt made of flowered cotton, which covers a wooden stick (part d) that is attached to the head through a hole in the torso and can be inserted by its bottom into the saddle on the horse (part c). The figure’s arms are moveable at elbows and shoulders, controlled by long wooden sticks attached to the hands. The horse is wooden and painted brown with black mane, tail and hooves. A gold and red saddle and gold halter and neck decorations have been carved into the figure. The face has slanted grey eyes, and red lips pulled back to show white teeth. A hole has been bored into the saddle for insertion of the human puppet figure who sits on the horse’s back.

Three dimensional wood and fabric puppet representing a grandmother. The head (part a) has a white painted face with finely carved and painted features, including wrinkles across the forehead and around the mouth. Ears and a small nose are protruding. The black carved hair is pulled back away from the face. The body (part b) has shoulders and arms painted gold. From an attached bodice falls a long skirt of cotton, covering a removable wooden stick (part c) that controls the movement of the head, and connects the figure to its round base (part d). The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand.

Shadow Puppet2872/10

Wayang kulit (shadow puppet) of gunungan (mountain) or kayon (tree of life). One side of the object shows a set of white stairs leading up to the closed double doors of a small temple. Guarding the doors at either side are two golden skinned, blue faced creatures (raksasa) holding maces. Their faces are fierce, with red eyes and sharp teeth in grinning mouths. To either side of the temple’s roof are the faces of dragons, with red eyes and mouths, sharp golden teeth, and feathered brows. At top is the head of a purple demon that wards off evil spirits. Above it is a golden Tree of Life full of monkeys, birds, flowers, and a serpent wrapped around the trunk. A tiger and water buffalo face each other at the tree’s bottom. On the other side of the object is a large blue demon’s head with open red mouth and white teeth. It is surrounded on all sides by yellow and red flames. The leather of the object is pierced through with patterns that create delicate lacy designs intended to allow light to shine through. The puppet is held firm by a long smooth handle made of polished horn.

Rod Puppet2872/14 a-c

Wayang golek rod puppet of the character Batara Wisnu. The head carries an elaborate headdress that incorporates images of the eagle deity Garuda on each side, covering a fringe of black hair. The face is painted white with carved features finely outlined in black. The mouth is red and smiling, surrounded by a curling moustache and small beard. The torso is covered by a black, sleeveless, beaded hanging below which is a sarong belted at the waist. The sarong hides a wooden stick that extends through the torso to control the movement of the head. The golden arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand, and are decorated with red and gold bracelets.

Shadow Puppet2872/12

Two-dimensional shadow puppet. The human-like figure is identical on both sides. It has white skin painted with sparse black hairs, round red eyes, an open, bearded red and gold mouth, and bared gold teeth. The hair is black and curled, and contains a gold headdress. The figure wears a checked and decorated garment that sits at the hips and falls to the floor. His legs are bare, with small colourful serpents wound around the ankles. The arms are encircled by elaborate bracelets at wrists and above elbows, and each hand has fingers as well as a large red and pink claw. A long white tail, decorated with several bracelets begins at the puppet’s hip and winds up to the top of its head. The leather of the puppet is pierced decoratively, especially throughout the hair, to allow light to shine through. Horn handles hold the puppet at the middle and move its fully extendable arms.

Shadow Puppet2872/11

Antaboga kulit shadow puppet. The creature’s face is pink, with partially closed eyes, a long snout, and an open red mouth with many sharp teeth and a thin black forked tongue. A golden headdress is attached to his forehead and a gold and white necklace surrounds his neck. The body is long and curved, eel-like, with no appendages, and ends with a golden tip on the tail. The object is painted the same on both front and back. The puppet is held up by a thin unpainted wooden handle attached at the bottom.

Three dimensional puppet. The woman’s head (part a) has a green painted face, with eyes that gaze upwards under curved brows. The hair is pulled back from her face and decorated with a triangular, blue headdress and carved gold embellishments. A long sleeved tunic covers the torso (part b), beneath which is a long patterned skirt hiding a removable wooden stick (part c) which controls the movement of the head and connects the figure to its cork base (part d) which is painted black . The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand, which are painted gold.

The mouth is open, showing 2 large teeth, and is surrounded by a moustache and beard. Ears and nose are protruding. The head is topped by a round black cap and hair is gathered at the back. The torso (part b) is covered with a long sleeved tunic and a yellow sarong, which covers a removable wooden stick (part c) that controls the movement of the head and connects the figure to its cork base (part d). The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand. Hands are painted red.
