Lyre3526/2

Seven-stringed lyre with a wooden sound chamber covered in leather skin; skin secured with nails. Triangular wood frame extends from top of sound chamber, made up of two vertical rods inserted through the leather and connected at the top by a third horizontal rod. Third rod has raised decorations on the sides and a cone-shaped protrusion on the left edge. Seven bands of braided plant fibre are tied across the horizontal rod. Oval-shaped hole towards bottom of skin cover; seven strings inserted through it and are wound around horizontal rod, overtop the braided bands. Strings are stretched over a small rectangular soundboard, adhered to centre of leather cover. Two-tiered circular decoration on back centre of sound chamber. All components of lyre are darkened to dark brown; strings are black.

Drum3383/14 a-b

Double-headed cylindrical metal drum with off-white rawhide skins at both ends (part a). Interlaced skin ties stretch and secure the skins. A single strip of rawhide is wound through the ties around the centre with a looped handle. Curved wooden drumstick (part b) with flat head. A short length of plant fibre is tied behind the flat head and attached in a notch partway down the shaft.

Drum3383/13

Wood drum with reptile skin. The drum tapers in from the top, and has a cylindrical base. The sides are painted with black and off-white vertical stripes. The skin is secured by two rows of wood pegs, and a notched leather band that wraps around it. One side has two raised areas, one with a metal ring, and the other wire, looped through.

Cape3345/4

Pleated, circular cape made from animal hide. Front centre of cape has large orange-brown triangular section with equally sized plain triangular sections on either side. Rest of cape has thinner orange-brown triangles spread throughout. All sections of cape covered in plain fringe, except for the large plain triangle to the right of the front orange-brown triangular section. Fringe is heavier on back of cape. Long hide strips on either side of neckline.

Round, woven basket with cowhide(?) covering the base. Basket is golden brown. Reddish-brown cowhide attached to basket with strand of dark brown, braided plant fibre. Braid ends on right side of basket in looped knot.

Headdress3345/3

Leather headdress with fur, cowrie shell, bead and button decorations. Leather band, that would wrap around forehead, has veil of chains hanging from bottom edge. Dark yellow and dark blue tube beads along bottom of veil. Bottom left edge of headband bordered with red and dark yellow tube beads, bottom right edge bordered with dark blue and green tube beads. Headband attached to round piece of skin, covered in grey and black animal hair, by eight leather straps. Round piece of skin would sit on top of head. Leather straps at front and back of headband are wider than the ones along the sides. Roundel in centre of headpiece, overtop of animal hair. Roundel has diamond and circular patterns done in white, light blue, dark blue, red and dark yellow round beads. Long chin strap, made of two leather strips, hangs from bottom edges of left and right sides of headband portion. Chin straps are secured together with thread covered in round beads. Beads are light blue, dark blue, red, yellow and white. Beads form a striped pattern. Wide leather strip extends from back of headdress. Ends of long back strip and chin strap have off-white and black animal hair. All leather surfaces are covered in cowrie shells on the exterior. In addition, the back strip has rows of red and green oval beads, dark blue and black tube beads, and plastic buttons. Buttons are black, white, dark maroon, yellow and green.

Headdress3345/1

Basketry headdress with bead decorations. Eight coiled basketry splints sewn together at left and right sides to form circular frame. Exterior of headdress covered entirely in glass beads. Beads form a mirrored, vertical stripe pattern. In centre, on both front and back, is a wide dark blue stripe with a yellow line down the middle. On either side of the dark blue stripe are white bands, red-orange bands, and then thin emerald green stripes. Six horizontal strands of yellow glass beads, on front and back, drape across entire vertical stripe design. Two columns of cowrie shells on left and right sides, splitting up front and back halves of headdress. Three groupings of coins hang from back of headdress, close to the top edge, at the ends of alternating red-orange and dark blue beaded strands. White fabric name tag, reading “Gordon Wilson,” attached to back interior wall of headdress, towards left side.

Dark brown hide cape with beaded designs. Short fringe all along bottom edge. Grid-like design on exterior. Lines done in white, dark blue, red, golden yellow and orange round beads. Three round beaded semi-circles in top left corner of cape, where it would wrap around neck. Semi-circles are white, yellow, dark blue and orange. Large triangle section, starting in middle centre of cape and extending to bottom edge, is pleated. Five rows of round beaded fringe across pleats. Beads are orange, white, black, red and dark blue. Just above the pleated section is a horizontal band of red, white and blue stripes. Design done in round beads. From the top centre edge of the cape to the striped band are seven round beaded columns. The first, third, fifth and seventh columns from the left are white. The second column from the left is dark blue. The fourth and sixth columns are a mix of dark blue and orange.

Small carved figure riding a bicycle. Figure wears a colonial style outfit - jacket with badges, belted shorts with a low flat hat marked with a diamond on the side. Figure carries a canteen on their left hip, and two small envelope-style bags - one on their waist and one hanging down from their head. The bike has a robust frame, two closely spaced tires, and a high small handlebar. Figure has painted eyes. Rounded base has been broken.
