Knife3589/1 a-b

Ceremonial parang (part a) with scabbard (part b). Long knife has a cylindrical horn hilt that tapers towards top; rectangular protrusion extends from left side. Both top half of hilt and protrusion are hollowed out. Circular, curvilinear, linear, and fang-like motifs carved in relief along upper half of hilt; hilt grip covered with woven band of rattan. Holes are drilled into the tapered section of the hilt, for hanging purposes; hilt attached to blade with resin. Knife blade is convex on one side, slightly concave on the other, and widens from the hilt; back edge of point is tiered. Linear, "X" designs, geometric, and curvilinear motifs incised along front of blade. Scabbard is composed of wood sheath for the long knife, and has a smaller plant fibre and fabric sheath tied to back with rattan. Wood sheath is made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan; upper two bands of rattan are plain, bottom four are tied decoratively. Panels decorated with floral and curvilinear motifs carved along front of wood sheath. Smaller sheath is undecorated and has two pieces of bamboo along the interior edges, providing shape. Long braided rattan cord, with looped ends, threaded through small sheath, for carrying purposes.

Knife3509/7 a-c

Long knife (part a), whittling knife (part b) and scabbard (part c). Long knife has a deer horn hilt carved into the profile of a bird’s head. Hourglass-like designs and curvilinear motifs incised throughout. Protruding from the top of the bird’s head and the beak are sections of short black and red hair. Hole drilled through pronounced nostrils, for hanging or attachment purposes. Hilt grip covered with woven band of rattan. The blade is convex on one side, slightly concave on the other, and widens from the hilt. Tip is angled. The whittling knife has a small curved blade attached to a long, slightly curved handle. Blade end of hilt decorated with a wide band of braided metal. Blades of both knifes are secured to hilts with resin. The scabbard is composed of a wood sheath for the long knife and a bark sheath for the whittling knife. Wood sheath made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan. Ties alternate between single dyed strands and thick decorative bands. Bands, woven with naturally coloured and dyed strands, consist of “X”-shaped designs, concentric circles and knots. Wood is painted dark red and has incised motifs, matching designs on long knife hilt, throughout. Bark sheath is undecorated and secured to wood sheath with plain rattan ties. Braided rattan carrying cord, with looped end, threaded through bark sheath.

Musical Instrument3489/6

Mouth organ (sompoton) made of bamboo pipes inserted into a dried gourd, sealed together with bees wax. Pipes are bundled together, with plant fibre ties, in two rows of four. Pipes in top row are all the same height, length of bottom pipes vary. Small holes along sides of pipes on outer edges. Gourd mouth piece has a circular body and long, thin neck that extends to the side.

Cylindrical, twilled basket (part a) woven in a diagonal pattern with folded strips of grass. Has a string tied twice around the outside near top. Wadded up dark brown-green and black cloth (part b) is inside at the bottom. There is also a coil (part c) of plant fibre, possibly rattan?

Scarf3295/23

Double-woven scarf, with a light side and a dark side. The scarf is divided into sections by changing colours - black to brown on one side, and the negative on the opposite side. The overall pattern is large repeating diamonds with smaller repeating geometric shapes, and thin lines of red.

Batik Textile3295/22

Small rectangular batik fabric. The long edges have scalloped embroidery, and the short edges have twisted tassels. The fabric is a light yellow-brown, with red motifs. Rectangle design in centre is comprised of repeating diamonds with suns and other shapes within. This is bordered by a band of floral designs, and then repeating lines.

Plain, cylindrical container (part a) with lid (part b). Container is darker around the smaller upper portion, has a smaller lighter portion just below, and has a medium brown larger lower portion. Lid is decorated with a band of woven rattan in brown and black. Surface of bamboo is shiny.

Rectangular shaped, maroon cotton band (parts a-c) consisting of a white geometric designs with yellow and green stripes on either side. In the middle is a frayed section of long pieces of coloured thread. Sash is all one piece. All parts are similar.

Two panels joined together at seam with geometric patterns in brown and outlined in white. Spots and lines of blue fill some spaces between. Border on one end of two stripes and one row of perpendicular lines with circles at end, and thin row of woven blue and light yellow-brown thread. Wide band of narrow alternating stripes in red-orange, light yellow-brown, and blue, with band in between of shallow zig-zag. Opposite end has short fringe.
