Mask3703/13

Humanoid male mask, woven from straw(?). Face has a large forehead, that tapers slightly to flat chin; wide nose protrudes outward. Eyes and mouth are rectangular cut outs. Eyebrows, moustache, and beard made of separate straw; dyed green. Long eyebrows jut outward diagonally, large moustache curves past edges of mask, and beard is wavy. Four tufts of undyed straw extend from top edge of mask, pointed straight. Three braided loops woven into either side and top centre of mask; loops knot together to form rigging.

Cotton Fibre3651/3 a-g

Seven different samples of raw, undyed cotton fibre. There are three samples of cleaned, processed cotton roving: off-white (part a), pale orange-brown (part b), and pale green-brown (part c). Also four bundles of raw natural cotton, with bits of seeds etc. still visible: off-white (part d), pale orange-brown (part e), pale green-brown (part f), and a slightly darker version of the pale green-brown (part g).

Handmade huipil made from pale orange-brown, pale green-brown and beige undyed cotton. The dress is made from three vertical, rectangular panels of fabric, joined with stitching, with a U-shaped neckline and openings at the sides for the arms. Decorated with embroidered designs. The design elements include: the pattern of the woven mat the cotton is placed on for beating; pumpkin flowers; crab, and soursop flowers.

Handmade huipil made from pale green-brown and beige undyed cotton. The dress is constructed of three vertical, rectangular panels of fabric, joined with stitching; with a U-shaped neckline and openings at the sides for the arms. Decorated with embroidered designs. The design elements include: water; tortoises; marigolds, mountains; Flor de Mayo (May flower); and a conjoined tarantula and water cockroach.

Pink metal mesh chinelo dancer's mask with a matted fibre beard, moustache, and eyebrows. Brows gently curve overtop oval-shaped eyes, with long lashes. Moustache curves sharply at ends, curling up around sides of face; beard has similar curve and protrudes outward from mask. Face has a large slanted mouth and rosy cheeks. Eyes, mouth and cheeks are painted on; thin nose is shaped from mesh. Mask is edged with painted fabric; yellow tie across back, for hanging purposes.

Decorated Gourd3592/14

Shiny black bulbous gourd container. The gourd is hourglass shaped, with the upper portion smaller than the lower portion. The top is painted with a large red and black flower, with gold centre, from which small gold dots extend out and small orange and yellow leaves. Are the body, groupings of bright flowers outlined in gold with the same small orange and yellow leaves.
