Comal or tortilla pan. Handmade round pan with uneven surface and slightly raised edges. The front is smooth and glazed (?), and the back is coarse. The centre and edges are blackened from use.

Devil Figure3573/16

Cartoneria or papier mache Judas devil figure. Standing figure with left arm forward, and right arm down at side. The face and large pointed ears are painted red, with inner ears painted blue with white outlines. The eyes are painted green, with black eyelids and eyebrows. The devil has two upright black horns, with a patch of synthetic hair adhered in between, and two more lengths adhered as a moustache. The chin is painted with black beard stubble. The body is painted green, with a blue painted neck scarf and matching blue boots, all with off-white details. Thin green string tied around neck and knotted. Vertical seam on back from construction.

Olla from central Mexico. Glazed upper body and interior are a dark brownish-red. The jar has a round body, tall neck, and flared lip. Two loop handles extend upright on opposite sides of shoulder. No lid.

Talavera pottery. Octagonal plate with raised flat lip, round shallow bowl, and dark blue rim. On the front, large eight-point orange floral design with eight green leaves separating each section. Within the orange are alternating white and light blue leaf-like designs. Large eight-point floral designAt centre, a small light blue flower within a dark blue eight-point star shape. The background is alternating patterns of green dots and connected dark blue dots. Back painted an off-white. Glazed on front and back. Single hole through the raised circular foot on the base.

Talavera dish. Blue on white. Interior design of a tall flower flanked by leaves, encircled by two thin bands. The interior sides of the shallow bowl are decorated with repeating leaves on a light blue vine, with one thin, light blue band below the rim, with the rim a solid dark blue. Exterior is white. Base signed.

Talavera pottery. Round plate with raised wavy lip and dark blue scalloped rim. Painted floral designs on the front of the plate. At centre, a cross with four arms of equal length within a four-point shape surrounded by brown flowers with yellow colouring around dark blue centres. Around the lip, repeating designs with dark blue fern-like leaves behind. Glazed on front and back. Single hole through the raised edge on the base. Signed Talavera Loza Blanca.

Candle Holder3573/15

Standing owl candle holder with small birds perched on its head, and to its sides on small logs. The birds are brightly coloured, with exception to two small black and white owls perched on the brow. Small cylindrical tube extends up from top of head, painted green with white and blue bands, and two smaller red bands over the white. Behind the two green logs are round openings on either side of the owl. The owl has a blue face with large yellow eyes. The wings are purple, outlined in red and black, and the chest is filled with horizontal bands of varying patterns in bright colours. The back is painted a light yellow, with green fern-like leaves overtop. Stands on three feet. Artist's mark on base.

Hand painted figural skull covered in insects - flies and larvae. The skull is painted like a sugar skull (la calavera de azuca) with lacy patterns outlining the eye sockets and jaw line, and large fern-like leaves extending down the cranium. Colourful insects are crawling all over the upper portion of the skull as well as two crawling out from the eye sockets. The insects have clay bodies and metal legs and antennae. The interior is painted yellow-green.

Painted clay dish. The bowl sits on a raised base. Central design is a dark brown-black star, with scalloped edge. At centre, large red four-point star. Between each point, a monkey on all fours in profile, and a stepped geometric design. Red rim. The exterior is dark brown, with three designs of five lines in descending lengths.
