Thorn Carving3326/31

Thorn carving depicting a firing squad execution scene (part a). Figures adhered to a rectangular particle board base. Along one edge are four military figures in army fatigues (layered wood chips) armed with large guns - one figure detached and detached head. Opposite are four condemned figures who are each tied to a post and blindfolded. The inscription on the base reads: "Bar Beach, Lagos, Nigeria. 25 May 1971. Public execution televised throughout federation."

Skull Mask3326/1

Small carved skull mask. A raised ridge line extends down the forehead and nose. The lower half of the face tapers in and curves outwards at the lips. The eyes are two cutout holes, with brown pigment extending down from the holes to the peak of the lips. A crown or headband of two parallel horizontal bands topped with triangles wraps around the head. Beneath, hair is indicated by small sections of brown marked with vertical grooves. The mouth is very angular, grinning, and filled with long white teeth.

Maiden Spirit Mask3326/8

Mmwo helmet mask. Carved from a single piece of wood, the mask depicts a female face with a large ornate coiffure. The face is coloured white with black raised dashed lines down the centre of the forehead and across brow ridges, and outlining the eyes, mouth and left nostril. The hair is divided into three sections against the head with three large crests on the head and split rolls on each side. The smaller crests on each side are twisted with an off-white X-shape through the centre like a spoke. Each side has a vertical groove with a royal blue in it. The large centre crest has raised notches around the exterior and five vertical bars through the centre. The rim of the mask has a series of holes through it. Small wire looped through holes at back of head for mounting.

Wooden panel carved in mid-relief. Depicts a humanoid figure with arms raised, hands held in fists, and a exaggerated tongue hanging from their mouth. Short horns extend up from their head, and large wings spread out to each side. The legs are each snake-like, and each twist in a loop before ending at a reptilian foot.

Staff3326/43

Metal staff with a single bell at the top. Bell is pocket-shaped with wide flat side seams that are pierced with holes. Two metal rings are looped through different holes, one with two Federation of Nigeria Halfpennies from 1959 attached through their centre holes. A small phallic point extends from the staff's shaft below the bell.

Headdress3326/13

Egungun headdress carved from a single piece of blackened wood. The base is dome-shaped with carved columns of small geometric shapes spaced by vertical lines. An arched crest extends from the top and is also carved with a continuation of the lower designs. The rim is decorated with a band of carved zigzags with a row of holes beneath.
