Dish2897/11

Round ceramic dish with abstract green leaf design on the front, composed of green shapes interspersed with thin green lines. This design is set on a yellow-white background. The dish has a circle in the middle surrounded by an angled rim, and along the edge of the rim there is a thin, black painted border. The dish has a small circlular foot. Around the edge of the back of the plate, there is a green triangle pattern. The rest of the surface is solid yellow-white. "Oaxaca Mexico" is carved lightly through the glaze into the base.

Dish2897/14

Round ceramic dish with large flower design. On the front is a smaller circle within an angled rim. The design is of one large flower each in orange, blue and brown. There are also rounded green leaves and thin black lines interspersed throughout. Around the edge of the back is a design of alternating blue, brown and orange sections of triangles. The remainder of the back is a yellow-white colour. The location where the plate was made is etched into the glaze. The dish has a small circular foot, inside which "Oaxaca Mexico" is carved lightly through the glaze, into the base.

Mermaid Figure2738/176 a-e

Large wooden mermaid with a main body (a) attached, moveable arms (b,c) and yellow, blue and red spread wings (d,e). She kneels on her yellow spotted green tail, and reaches out with arms bent at the elbows. A bracelet, ring, necklace, flower and crab are painted onto her bright pink body parts and her long hair is black.

Mermaid Figure2738/175

Burnished Oaxacan black pottery mermaid, with long curled hair and playing a guitar, is perched on circular pottery foot. Her large, flattened tail curves high up her right side and is covered with impressed scale and fin motifs. There is a small hole at her left hip and another hole in the base that lead into the hollow belly.

Standing wooden devil doll with moveable arms and a wooden base nailed to each foot. The body is painted red with black detailing and painted yellow shorts have black trim. A hole in the rear suggests that a tail is missing.

Red damask blouse with yellow embroidery that is worn with a skirt (E180 b). The blouse has a square shape with a round neck and no sleeves. On the front and back is a large embroidered square with alternating bands of a diamond and stripe pattern in yellow and black on red ground. The damask is woven containing a floral motif. The inner lining is red cotton with a white dotted pattern.

A loom (part a-d) with an unfinished woven wool textile consisting of white striped geometric pattern of circles, ovals and triangles on a dark green ground. The textile is attached to two large, cylindrical shaped wooden sticks (part a). Intertwined in the warp is one cylindrical shaped heddle covered in dark green twine; two bamboo sticks and three flat, rectangular battens with triangular, pointed ends (parts b,c,d).

Brown leather sandals (parts a-b) with a wide strap across the toes, back and two on the front. The top has a floral decoration with red and green velvet underlay. There are two buckle fastenings on the side. Slight tooling around the edges of the sole. The soles are nailed. Pressed into the sole is a circular stamp reading ‘Mexico’.
