Bark Board2716/25

Large standing board with strip of grass looped through holes at top. Made from a piece of palm bark, one side is undecorated, the other shows a red and black figure with plumed bird head and ornate body tattoos standing against a white background. Above the figure, painted in yellow and black, is an arch with floral motifs; below is a painted stage of step-like designs.

Rectangular-shaped wood carving of a figure with the base end finishing in a short spike. Figure holds out to the front a pair of barbed poles between which a snake winds up to the chin. Poles, body and face are covered with sharply painted decoration in white, ochre, red and black pigments; the back is unpainted.

Roof Finial2716/21

Carved, hollow, dark wood house finial depicts a large eagle with wings spread high, sitting on the head of a female figure that leans against the conical finial. The figure's face is covered with white tattoo decoration and she wears only painted bracelets and anklets. The eagle is painted white, brown and black. Both have shell eyes. On the sides of the finial cone are long peacock feather-like designs, painted orange and white. Artist signature is carved around base.

Female Figure2716/16

Basketry female figure standing on two short legs with toes holds a small child in her left arm. Both have mask faces with cowrie shell eyes that are painted with red, black and gray pigment. The female has numerous grass braids hanging from the top rim of the mask, into which are attached carved cowrie shells.

Woven male figure with a bird on top of his head. The bird has a looped string on its back and is painted red and black. The man has a flat face with cowrie shell eyes, protruding nose and painted details in red and black. From the back of the head hang knotted pieces of string as hair. The body is round with one arm raised, stout legs and long toes.
