Shell Money3557/15

Shell rings on a braided plant fibre cord sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Large white ring hangs from bottom of cord; channels carved through middle on front and back of ring. Smaller flat shell rings are threaded through the cord on either side of large ring. Yellow card inserted into bag, behind shell rings, with images of shells and an individual wearing it; paragraph of text describes rings and their purpose.

Overall repeating diamond pattern on both exterior and interior worked in darker colours. Attached rounded handle is composed of four firm sticks(?) stitched together, with the outer two pieces plaited. Two woven handles with openings on opposite sides.

Oval basket with handle. Flat oval base with high raised edges made of coiled flexible sticks(?) bound together with vertical plant fibre stitching. Overall repeating diamond pattern on both exterior and interior worked in darker colours. Attached rounded handle is composed of four firm sticks(?) stitched together, with the outer two pieces plaited. The handle is stitched to the interior of the basket's raised edges at centre.

Large woven bag (bilum). The bag is loosely woven and expandable. Its shape is rectangular with a rounded bottom. The opening is wide. The body of the bag has alternating horizontal bands of a natural light yellow-brown with either dark grey, tan or blue-green. A long wide handle or tumpline of alternating natural, tan and dark grey colours is attached to the bag at the corners of the bag's opening.

Bamboo comb. The body is rectangular with a row of eleven long cutout teeth and a handle that tapers to a blunt tip. The comb itself has a natural overall curve due to the shape of the bamboo.

Large looped net bag (bilum), loosely woven and expandable. The handle or tumpline is circular with the body woven from the handle. Due to the curve at the top, the bag is narrow at the shoulder, widening toward a rounded rectangular bottom. The opening is wide. The body of the bag has horizontal bands of red alternating with bands of brown or green.

Wig3566/1 a-g

Short wig made up of brown curly human hair (part a); an interior net of red yarn and plain cord holds the shape of the wig. Back edge of wig is decorated with a band of white feathers; front left and right corners of wig are decorated with small yellow flowers. Wig has six attachments, consisting of: a red parrot on a stick, that attaches to the top (part b); brown-black and white feathered wings, that attach at the front (part c); a spray of multi-coloured parrot feathers, that attach to the front of the wings (part d); two small white and yellow feathers, that stick out on either side of the wig (parts e-f); and a snake skin headband (part g). Large feather decorations (parts c-d) are missing attachments; small feathers are inserted into wig and held in place with their shafts. Headband has two ties on either side.

Mask3581/1

Baining bark cloth face mask. The hat has a sturdy formed brim, which expands into a conical crown, painted with repeating patterns of triangles on a continuous line that alternate in black and orange-red. A pointed wooden tip is inserted into the point of the hat. The conical crown is formed with a circular piece of wood, which has straight sticks attached to it, that extend up and meet at the tip. The interior of the crown is lined with large leaves. The face mask is attached to the hat where the brim meets the crown, and has a sturdy formed jaw line. The mask is painted with a skeletal face design showing sunken cheeks and forehead, open mouth with pointed teeth and large outlined black oval-shaped eyes. There is a hole through the centre of the forehead.
