String Puppet3352/8

Mamulengo string puppet (marionette) of a 'Morte' or Death character. Head, hands and feet are carved from wood and painted. The right hand is stylized to resemble the blade of a scythe. He wears a long-sleeved white shirt and white pants, both with black cuffs, a black veil, and black painted boots. The white face has two large black eye sockets, a wide toothy grin, missing nose, and streaks of red across the face. Attached by several black strings to a wooden control bar composed of a single long piece of wood with one cross-bar.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Diabo' or devil character. He has red skin, short black hair, long blunt horns that extend forward, a pointed chin and hooked nose, and large eyes with red and yellow pupils. His fabric body / tunic is shiny red with a dot pattern, and a long black cape.

He has light pink-beige skin, wide almond-shaped black eyes, rounded eyebrows, large triangular nose, and a small rectangular mouth with thin red lips. He has painted short black hair. His fabric body / tunic is black with a lace scarf draped around his neck and down the front. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny black ribbon at the wrists and white ribbon at the neck. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

He has yellow-beige skin, large deep-set oval black eyes, thin rounded eyebrows, a pointed nose, and a closed mouth with thin red lips upturne at the corners. The sunken eyes have reddish-purple discolouration around them. His fabric body / tunic is light green with sleeves and skirt of red with small flowers in blue, white and yellow. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny gold ribbon at the wrists and neck. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

She wears a dress made of two different yellow floral-patterned fabrics with dark pink ribbon lining the neckline, cuffs and belting the waist. She has long curly black hair with a pink and orange ornament on the left side of her head. The fabric is adhered to the hands. Her boots are painted black. She is attached by many black strings to a wooden T-shaped control bar.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Simao' (Simon) character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has light pink skin, wide black eyes, sculpted eyebrows, large triangular nose, small moustache, and a red upper lip. The lower jaw is hinged and movable, and is controlled by a long looped white string that extends down from the chin. He has attached faux fur black hair, that is covered by a woven wide brim hat. His fabric body / tunic is red with blue, white and yellow flowers. The fabric is adhered to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny light green ribbon at the wrists and neck. The hands are carved to define the fingers, and the nails are painted white. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Cobra chibana' or crocodile character. Head is carved from wood and painted. The crocodile is dark green with a light blue with floral patterned cloth cover starting at the neck. The head is made of two pieces of wood, and hinged to allow the mouth to open. The teeth are bared, and extend down the length of both upper and lower jaws. The fabric sleeve is quite long and tube-like. There is a stick inside the sleeve, at the back of the head.

She has long brown hair with a dark pink mesh floral ornament on the right side of her head, and her face is painted with green eye shadow, long black lashes, and dark red circles of blush.
