Watercolour and ink painting of Guanyin, Buddhist goddess of mercy, produced for the lunar New Year. The image shows Guanyin dressed in white and grey robes, with a white and gold crown and elaborate gold necklace. She sits cross-legged above brown and green vines, and in front of circles filled with geometiric linear patterns and blue and gold colouring. The painting is adhered, below the midpoint, to a long scroll of heavy paper covered in silk and attached to a black wood scroll bar. A brown ribbon is attached to the top of the scroll.

Zhongkui Riding the Black Tiger3082/2

Watercolour and ink painting of Zhongkui, king of ghosts in Chinese folklore, produced for the lunar New Year. Zhongkui rides on the back of a black tiger, flying over a mountainous landscape. He holds a flaming orb in one upraised hand. Two figures stand below on a hillside, one brandishing an unsheathed sword, the other hoding a brown ring with a diamond motif in both hands. The painting is adhered to a long scroll of heavy paper covered with white silk, attached to a wood scroll bar. A brown ribbon is attached at top.

Double Longevity3082/1

Watercolour and ink painting produced for the lunar New Year. The image is of lady Magu, an immortal, protector of females, known as the Hemp Maiden. She carries a staff over her shoulder, balancing a basket of greenery and lotus flowers. To her left stands Shou Xing, the god of longevity. He holds a peachwood (?) staff in one hand and lifts a dried fruit to Magu with the other. To her other side is a child carrying a basket of immortal peaches. A black and red inscription in Chinese text is written above the figures. The painting is adhered to a long scroll of heavy paper covered in silk and attached to a black wood scroll bar. A brown ribbon is attached to the top of the scroll.

Military rank badge. Square embroidered silk panel with both gold and silver couching. The central figure is a lion embroidered onto a separate piece of fabric and sewn onto the panel. The background is a sequence of semi-regular patterns with ocean motifs interspersed, such as sea creatures, a shell, plant life. A border edges the panel and has a repeating pattern. The panel is sewn to a plain blue silk backing piece. On the backing fabric, sewn to the lower right corner is a small paper with the inscription “Lion, Military official of the second rank.” Colours are blue, light blue, gold, black, green, orange, and a very pale light blue.

Civil rank badge. The silk badge vertically divides into two halves, with the embroidered image continuing across both pieces. Embroidery contains both silver and gold couching. The central figure is a standing bird, embroidered onto a separate piece of fabric that has been sewn onto the panel. The bird stands on one foot, with wings partly spread. The embroidered background, from bottom to top, has a two-tone regular pattern in gold, blue rectangles, an irregular pattern in gold, and small blue rectangles in a regular pattern interspersed with a variety of motifs. A border edges the panel in a repeating pattern of motifs. Colours are blue, dark blue, black, gold, green, and red.

Maroon tunic with appliqué. The tunic has a short standing collar, long sleeves and side opening with frog closures. The collar has purple trim. The sleeves have blue, green and yellow bands, white meander design and purple trim. The side opening has blue and yellow bands, green openwork design and purple trim. The inside is unlined.

Black apron with white embroidery. The apron has narrow curved bib with a metal button closure, leading to a square skirt and long ties. The lower bib has floral motifs in white on black ground. The upper skirt has a centre pocket with a leaf motif in white. From the sides extend long white ties with ends embroidered with floral motifs in pink and green. The back of the upper bib is lined with red floral print fabric.

Back Apron867/26

Black and white apron with embroidery. The apron is square with long red ties sewn to the upper corners. The tie ends have rows of embroidery in black and white. The front has a large white square with embroidered floral motifs in black. The edges of the black backing are folded up and sewn overlapping the white square, creating a border. On the inner edge of the black border is a white meander pattern.

Skirt1458/42 a

Multicoloured skirt with embroidery, hanging panels and tassels. Across the top is a wide green waistband with two red ties and phoenix, dragon and cloud motifs. Below the waistband are hanging panels. The centre front panel has a pink peony on black and cream grounds. The centre back panel has a dragon motif on pink ground. The smaller panels are thin and rectangular with one end flared and pointed. On the front are embroidered different motifs on different coloured grounds. Each hanging panel has two tassels. The tassels are decorated with beads and bells. The back is lined with fuchsia silk.

Jacket1458/40

Blue damask silk jacket with embroidery. The jacket has a short standing collar, long wide sleeves and side opening with frog closures. Around the neck, side opening and bottom hem is a scalloped border with scenes of landscape and human figures on cream ground. Alongside the borders are orange and yellow stripes and floral trim. Around the sleeves is a cream band with scenes of landscape and human figures. The damask is woven containing the Taoist symbols of the Eight Immortals. The inside is lined with orange damask silk woven containing cloud and floral motifs.
