String PuppetEh150

Wooden puppet of a standing bovine animal, with a single hump over its shoulders. The hindquarters, tops of the front legs, shoulders and the neck are covered with burlap. The head is detached from the body, connected only by a sleeve of burlap. There is a cavity underneath the stomach. The face is painted white with black and red rimmed eyes, a red mouth, and articulated horns and ears. A lead line of twined cord is looped through the nostrils.

Puppetry cart, in pieces. Wooden wheel with metal rim (part a), wooden wheel with metal rim that has been broken and bound with twine (part b), wheel axle (part c), arm (part d), arm that has been broken and repaired with wooden supports (part e), base of wagon (part f), two wagon sides (parts g and h). Wheel spokes are painted red; axle and arms are painted red; wagon base is painted red on one face and three sides with a thin white line inside a thicker black line on the red face; the two wagon sides are painted red with a yellow border, a yellow line in a recessed groove. The sides are inscribed with "1976" painted in white and black, with a black reverse.

Three-dimensional female humanoid puppet (Tamil dancer character): head with headdress (part b) fits into body clothed in a skirt and shirt (part a). The body has jointed arms and legs. Headdress is black with geometric shapes of silver foil paper pressed onto the surface; blue and grey gauzy material is gathered at the front of the headdress and trails from the back. The figure is clothed in a midriff-baring black vest with pink sleeves; silver metallic material covers the breasts and forms a sort of neck ruff. The skirt is a full- length, multicoloured garment with a purple v-shaped panel and three circular appliqués made form silver metallic material at the front. Figure's face is a rosy pink colour with red lips, black eyebrows, a black bindi and a black beauty mark on the chin; figure wears dangling earrings of white beads and silver foil. Hair is purple dyed plant fibre tied into a long braid at the back. The index finger and thumb on both hands are joined in a circle and attached to the trailing ends of the gauzy material cascading from the back of the headdress. Feet are bare with white toenails. Puppet is attached to thin black cords tied to wooden sticks.

Three-dimensional female humanoid puppet: head with yellow beaded and sequined headdress (part b) fits into body with bodice and skirt (part a). The body has jointed arms and legs. Hair is dark blue dyed twine. The head is decorated with an orange lace ribbon at the ahirline, and a purply-pink lace floral design ribbon running from forehead to headdress. Red ribbon frill at neck. Bodice is yellow with beaded and sequined design and metallic gold and silver ribbon across chest. Sleeves are multicoloured sythetic material puffed at shoulders and gathered at elbows. The same material forms an underskirt with a semi-transparent black overskirt that has blue and silver embroidered flowers. The figure is also wearing a purple, orange, yellow and off-white floral print shawl, which she holds in each hand.
