Basket3643/5

Shallow, circular husking basket woven from plant fibre; done with herringbone twill weave. Rim formed with two wood coils, wrapped in plant fibre; main body of basket secured between coils. Plant fibre wrappings dyed(?) a dark brown. Additional external and internal coils, undecorated, are underneath the wood rim, for reinforcement; held to rim with twisted cords. Body of basket is golden brown, coils are grey-brown.

Necklace3643/2

Round beaded neck ring with striped design. Necklace consists of eight rows of encircling beads, becoming successively smaller in size towards centre. Rows are (from exterior to interior): alternating white and blue, orange-red, amber, orange-red, white, orange-red, periwinkle blue, orange-red. All beads are circular except for white beads in exterior row; white beads are oval-shaped. Thin strands of braided metal placed intermittently across neck ring to hold beads in place. Necklace secures at back with a large hook clasp.

Gourd Container3643/1

Gourd container with attached lid, round bottom, and a long slender neck that curves. Leather lid covers circular opening, and has beaded stripes along the top and bottom edges; done in light green, red, dark blue, orange, and white. Lid is attached to long hide strip that is stitched along the back of gourd, acting as a handle; skin strip is looped at end. Groupings of stripes decorate length of strap; done in dark blue, red, orange, and white.

Cooking Pot3643/10

Circular, round-bottomed cooking pot made of off-white clay. Pot has large opening with a slightly flared lip. Body is wide at the shoulder, coming to a sharp ridge. Large semi-circular outlines extend from ridge, towards opening; done with orange-red pigment. Lip also coloured orange-red. Rest of pot is undecorated. Base and sides have burn marks.

Stool3643/12

Folding coconut shredder stool. Stool consists of two rectangular boards with slight zigzag profiles and cutouts in their centres; cutouts have angled edges. One board is inserted through the cutout of the other, allowing them to fold inward and outward; rest flat when folded inward, form a low "X" shape when folded out. The upper arms, that form the seat, are decorated with stain and incised geometric motifs. Pencil grid overtop each arm with central design of three interconnected diamonds, inside a vertically oriented rectangle, with diagonal lines extending from top and bottom corners; space between edges of diamonds and rectangle border are carved out. Edges of seat are stained(?) dark brown; checker pattern across centre, where arms meet. Extending from the front arm is a serrated blade. Blade is oval-shaped and is inserted into a rectangular protrusion that ends in a triangle-like base; area around top of rod is circled with metal. Triangle-like base of rod decorated with incised crisscrossing and diagonal lines. Lines, and edges of rod, are darkened with stain(?). Rest of stool is undecorated.

Sections of plant fibre wrap are darker than rest, forming a light striped pattern around opening of basket. Entire basket is naturally coloured a light yellow. Small metal loop is threaded through bottom edge.

Space between two braided cords, at front of necklace, have columns of red-orange beads trimming two columns of white beads with blue stripes through them. Oval-shaped attachment along inner edge, decorated in dark blue beads; able to cross necklace band or protrude inward. Necklace secures at back with a large hook clasp.

Beer Strainer3643/4

Woven beer (pombe) strainer; done in a herringbone twill weave from plant fibre. Strainer has an elongated cone shape, that closes with a tail of loose fibre. Opening is folded over, forming a thick band; weave is tighter at bottom edge and loose ends protrude outward, like fringe. Tail of strainer has two woven bands to secure strands together; small braided loop extends from both bands.
