Shadow Puppet3364/1

Shadow puppet, Karagoz, made of semi-transparent animal skin and a watery paint or dye, soaked into the skin. The puppet arm, body, legs and hat are separate pieces, tied together with a thin plastic cord through small holes. The figure is a male, wearing blue short pants, with a red and orange tunic, hat and shoes. The hat is made as a removable piece, but is attached in place with a plastic tie. His one hand is under his chin; his other arm is articulated in two places so its position can be manipulated (hold for stick in lower arm). He has a black beard and mustache. The main hole for the stick (to manipulate the puppet) is in his upper chest area. The maker's name is written along the back of one leg.

Textile is woven of heavy wool on a warp of horse hair(?), half in a wide blue and tan stripe pattern, and half in a series of diamonds filled with coloured patterning in red, dark blue, tan, pink and yellow. Underside shows colours with less fading, and holds the end threads. Fringe appears to be horse hair warp ends.

Textile. Long textile woven of heavy, stiff wool has been folded over and stitched together along two sides to create a large bag that is open at top. Pattern on front is lines of diamond motifs in green, red, pink, orange and grey separated by solid lines of red and brown. On the back are lines in a variety of thicknesses in several shades of brown.

Dress3295/9

Long silk red dress with long sleeves. Gold-coloured embroidery, bullion embroidery and sequins decorate the sleeve cuffs and neck. The designs flare out from the centre to the sides of the garment, leaving space for a large triangular flower and vase(?) design at the front of the skirt. The hem and neckline are trimmed with beige lace. The interior is lined with an off-white fabric. There is a small orange bow attached to the cuff of each sleeve and the chest.

Rug3295/21

Square-shaped rug with a cream-coloured background, light blue border, and light green square at centre. The entire rug has geometric shapes in various light colours, with a few exceptions in black, and there is one red hourglass shape within the green square. Two opposing edges are lined with tassels, which have been bound in either blue or pink, then tied together to create a triangle.

Rectangular, beige textile (part a) with a wide band of embroidery on each end and short tassels. Evenly space along the edges, four on each side, are groups of five embroidered designs in red and blue. Faint bands of light beige lines run through the fabric horizontally. Textile fragment (part b), the end of a rectangular, beige textile with embroidery and short tassels. The embroidery design is a repeating m or w-shape in blue, which creates two triangles, from centre up to the sides. The v-shape is bordered by red embroidered flowers, and four red matching m or w-shape designs are at centre. A thin border runs across the bottom before the tassels. Textile (part c) has been reworked into a blouse front, and backed with blue fabric.

Small, rectangular, cream-coloured textile with fringe on the short sides. The gauze-like brocade has lines of light beige, and red and dark blue geometric designs along the sides and ends. Small tufts of light blue, black, red fibre are knotted into the ends of the twisted fringe.

Carpet Beater3275/24

Beater used to push down weft during construction of a carpet. Implement is a large metal comb, tines long and rectangular, shorn off at an angle at tip. Metal slabs are used to separate tines at back of comb, with one extending upward to fit inside the handle which sits on top of comb at a steep angle. Handle is made of two pieces of wood, curving back to fit the hand. Pommel is rounded.
