Storyteller Figure3549/7

Ceramic figure of a female storyteller. She is depicted sitting, with her legs stretched out straight in front of her, and holding a circular container. Three children are sitting on her legs, one is holding her left hip and she has three children balanced on each arm. All figures are white. She has a smooth circular face, with a thin pointed nose and round open mouth. Her eyes are painted closed; done in black, mouth is dark pink. Black hair is painted along the top, back and sides of her head; two buns protrude from either side, with pink hair ties wrapped around them. There is a butterfly on the side of her left bun. She is wearing tall boots, a long-sleeved dress, and necklace. Boots are white with black soles and black line decorations. Necklace consists of pink beads with matching fringe extending from the beads; inverted "U" pendant in centre of necklace. Dress is mostly black with white scalloped trim along the bottom edge. Sleeves, pointed collar and upper left section of dress are white. Sleeves are trimmed with black and pink stripes. Wrapped around her waist is a pink belt, that ties on the right side, with black geometric designs throughout. The container she is holding is white with a small circular opening in the top centre; animals motifs painted across surface, in black. The children all have black hair; boys have short hair, girls have braids. Their eyes consist of curved lines and mouths are oval-shaped. They are wearing an assortment of outfits, consisting of overalls, buttoned shirts, vests and short-sleeved shirts; done in black, orange, pink and white. A majority of the children have their hands stretched towards the storyteller's container. One child, sitting on the storyteller's left leg, is holding a small black bird. Puffin Mask3584/1 a-o

Puffin head mask (part a) with multiple attachments (parts b-o). Puffin has a fish clamped in its multi-coloured beak, and four wide holes drilled around the back edge of its head. Eyes are triangular, with long lines extending from their bottom edges to back edge of mask. Circular area around eyes is undecorated; top, bottom and back of head are painted black. Two wood sticks tied in circles (parts b-c) attach to mask with short pegs (parts l-o); cormorant feathers, with wood carvings on tips, extend from outer circle (parts d-k). Carvings on feather ornaments consist of a thin bird head (part d), two fish (parts e-f), two fins (parts g-h), and three wings (parts i-k). Circular rings are painted orange-red; larger one has holes drilled through it for attachments to fit into. All wood attachments have black, dark red-orange, and light blue highlights painted across them; decorative incisions and elements carved in relief throughout. All cormorant feathers are dark grey-black. Metal ring attached to back of mask component, for hanging.

Ceramic figure of a female storyteller. She is depicted sitting, with her legs stretched out straight in front of her, and holding seven children in her arms. Four children are sitting on her lap, three are clinging to her shoulders and right arm, and one is on the back of her head. All figures are pink-brown. She has a smooth circular face and rosy cheeks. Has triangular eyes, a thin and pointed nose, and round open mouth; eyes, nostrils and brows are done in black, mouth is dark red. Black hair, done in relief, wraps around top, back and sides of head; large bun protrudes from back, with a red hair tie wrapped around it. She is wearing tall boots, a long-sleeved dress, necklace and rings. Boots are white with beige trim, highlighted with dark red; grey lines and turquoise diamond motifs throughout. Necklace consists of turquoise beads with grey fringe extending from the beads; rings are also turquoise. Dress is mostly black with turquoise, red and grey geometric motifs throughout. The chest and sleeves are beige with dark red and turquoise motifs; collar is dark red. The children all have black hair and rosy cheeks; facial features all done in black. Their eyes are triangular, noses are dots, and mouths are a mix of lines and diamonds. They are all wearing beige outfits with an assortment of black and dark red decorations. A majority of them have their hands raised to their faces. One of the children being held by the storyteller, in the front centre, is holding a block with the letter "A" on it. Artist signature painted on bottom of storyteller, with pencil inscriptions around it.

Bronze sitting couple. A man and woman sit side by side on a bench. Both figures have long, oblong heads. The male wears a small hat on top of his head, and has a flat beard that extends out from his chin. The man rests his right hand and on the woman's right shoulder, and the remaining hands are all rested on their knees. The woman is bare breasted and has her hair back or wears a headdress.

Pot3549/1

Round white pot with a wide circular opening and straight lip. Shoulder curves out sharply before gently tapering into a circular base. Base is concave. Exterior of lip is painted black, edges bordered with white, with white triangular motifs throughout. Edge above base is painted dark orange-red. Four rectangular panels painted along sides of pot, divided by white lines. Panel on front has a black turtle inside an orange circle. White triangles and ovals across shell and on feet of turtle. Diamonds, pointed ovals and geometric motifs throughout circle; done in white and dark orange-red. Sections of rectangle not covered by circle are black with white triangles. Other three panels have birds as the central design; birds are on a white background. From left to right, the birds are: yellow, black, and orange. Yellow bird is standing inside an irregularly shaped, inverted triangle and surrounded by orange and black waves; rest of rectangle is black with abstract plant and dot motifs. Black bird has gold highlights throughout and is standing inside an irregularly shaped, inverted triangle. Rest of panel is black with white floral motifs throughout. The orange bird is inside a diamond, hovering next to a yellow flower. The diamond is framed with black triangles made up of intersecting lines; triangles are bordered by connected black triangles. Two thin triangles are hanging from the top of the diamond, overtop the yellow bird. Pot is unsigned.

Crown completely covered in yellow beads, with long strands hanging from bottom edge (part a). Crown is conical in shape with a circular pedestal on top. Bird figure sits on top centre of it and is detachable (part b). Body of crown covered in two rows of protruding bird figures. All have large white eyes, tips of tails painted white. On front and back, along bottom edge, are faces with oval-shaped eyes, long noses, and open oval-shaped mouths. All facial features extend outward. Crown has a padded interior, covered with white painted paper mache.

Bird figure sits on top centre of it and is detachable (part b). Body of crown decorated with wide black and white stripes, pedestal decorated with identical thinner stripes. Overtop stripes on main body, there are two rows of protruding bird figures. All birds are white, wings decorated with black stripes. On front and back of crown are black beaded faces, with oval-shaped eyes, long noses and circular open mouths. Features of faces are done in white and extend outward. Crown has a padded interior, covered with unbleached cotton.

Reproduction of an Edo ivory cup, made as a ceramic cup. Incised line patterns around sides of upper bowl; the cup is upheld by four human figures. Tiny holes on the inside surface of the cup were made to replicate the look of ivory.
