Kachina Figure3255/5

Large kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure has a bucket-shaped head with a flat top, feathers attached at top and back, and large rounded ears emerging from each side. Face is light brown, with a stepped pattern on each cheek in black, pink and green beneath large black slit-shaped eyes. Snout is a protruding tube. A thin cotton rope is tied around neck and hangs down back. Head sits directly on the shoulders, with carved arms held close to body and fists at stomach. Torso is painted dark pink-red with patterning in yellow and green. A short white skirt has black, yellow, green and red square patterning down the right side, with wide legs and large feet emerging below and attached to a thick square base.

Small Kachina doll. Carved from wood, doll has a large head with a tall, square, rust and green headdress, feathers at rear, and a brim that protrudes over forehead. Face has a tubular nose and prominent chin. Rust and yellow torso holds arms tightly at sides, fists in front of stomach. Skirt is full and round, white, with a black and rust pattern down the right side. Legs emerge from below, with large rounded feet.

Small Kachina doll. Carved from wood, dark figure is short, with a large round head holding two small balls at back and on left side- to which is attached a small feather. Round eyes and mouth are painted on the face, along with three sets of short double white lines at midpoint. A thin cotton string surrounds the neck and hangs down the back of the doll. Torso is painted with a green neckerchief and white lines representing a shirt, with arms held close to sides and fists held at hips. Black checked skirt reaches to the knees and brown legs are adhered to bottom of doll.

Kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure is a long, rounded rectangle with a slightly thicker head. Remnants of feather and cotton fibre sit on top of head, nose is tubular and protrudes out from face, and eyes are black lines above a multicoloured chevron at centre. Front of figure is coloured light green, white, and yellow with black outlining, hands shown placed on chest. Pink lines emerge from bottom on both front and back. Back has a base of white, with green and yellow at shoulders and rust at back of head. Doll is glued to a wood base

Small wooden figure, male. Figure is carved from unfinished wood, with a large head, and narrow shoulders and torso the same width as hips and legs. Toes are pointed slightly inward. Arms are lightly carved in a crossed position across the figure’s chest, above a drawn design encircling the waist made up of diamond shapes and crosses. Suggestion of a robe or scarf is drawn across the shoulders at back. Head is covered in dark ink to represent hair, and large staring eyes are drawn on face. Mouth is lightly incised. Figure’s feet are planted into a base of soft putty.

Small Kachina doll. Carved from wood, doll has large rounded head with feathers attached at top and back, face painted with black lines for eyes above decorated cheeks and a red tubular snout. A thin cotton cord is tied around neck, hanging down the back of the doll. Shoulders are narrow, with arms kept close to sides, fists held in front of stomach. Torso is painted orange with green and yellow decoration, and a necklace at centre. Skirt is full and round, with red and black patterning down the right side. Legs emerge from beneath, painted red and grey.

Soul Catcher3260/131

Soul catcher made of a tubular piece of grizzly bear shin bone, flared at each open end. The ends are split partway to look like open animal mouths. Eyes are carved above each mouth with incised designs to indicate nostrils. A human-like face and torso, with hands raised to his chin, is carved at top centre, with two small holes drilled at either side of face.

Round basket with pattern and imagery. Basket is a light brown-yellow colour with images in darker brown. Narrow round base flares upward toward midpoint, lower half embellished with human figures standing square to front, arms hanging at sides, feet turned outwards. Figures are interspersed with large geometric designs resembling ‘C’s. Above midpoint basket recedes toward rim, with alternating open and closed square designs. Rim is short and flares slightly outward, and a dark weave edges the lip.
