Moccasins3207/2 a-b

Pair of beaded moccasins. Shoes are made of hide with a wide ankle flap and ties at front. Upper is fully beaded with a blue panel on the toe housing squares of red and metallic beads, and a blue strip around the back of the heel. Around base of shoe is a strip of white beading with triangles in red, yellow and dark blue. Soles are hardened and worn.

Squash blossom necklace. Double strand of silver beads carries small squash blossom emblems made of thin metal, 10 to a side, each with a circle of bright blue or green turquoise at centre. At bottom hangs an openwork inverted silver crescent decorated with three similar circles of turquoise. Hook clasp at back.

Beaded bag. Front panel is fully beaded, showing a design of a red and a black horse facing each other, above a large yellow flower with green and pink leaves on a blue-grey background. Support fabric is black cotton, with a blue patterned cotton lining on the interior. A thin green handle is tied at top corners and centre of bag, along with a single green pompom.

Bracelet3207/11

Silver bracelet with turquoise stone. Small cuff is oval in shape, open at back, and increases in width toward the centre. Design is openwork at front, where an arrow shaft with head and fletching is incorporated and lays horizontally across the piece. A gammadion cross is set on top, and carries a small oval turquoise stone at centre. Along arms on both sides are etchings of Navajo design, including a stylized bird and arrow.

Fish Club3260/32

Fish club carved in the form of a sea lion. Its head has prominent eyes, open mouth with teeth, and small ears. Its side has defined tail flippers, ribs and spine. The handle is shaped with finger grooves for a strong grip, and a small handle drilled through.

Basket3240/1

Basket sampler showing four sections of different types of basket weaving. Openwork basket is tall and rectangular, with a rounded base and walls that flare slightly toward rim. Large loops are attached at the upper layer, through which are passed two tumpline ropes that serve as a handle. A skinned ermine is sewn to the handle (with its nose and whiskers still present). Cedar oil was applied to the basketry after completion.

Round basket with gammadion cross design. Woven basket has a recessed base from which rises the wall, flaring slightly outward toward rim. Weaving is fine and tight, and decoration is an imbricated pattern of an encircling line of gammadion crosses (swastikas) at centre in dark brown between rows of parallelograms in brown and shades of orange.

Small, tightly woven basket with lid. Base rises at centre, with a patterned weave. Round basket has a bulbous body with a decorative stepped line and small triangle pattern below the shoulder in colours of rust and dark brown. Basket rim curves inward, coloured light brown with a small checked pattern at shoulder. A lid (part b) fits onto rim, round, rising toward its centre where sits a small raised finial. Patterning on the lid matches that of the basket.

Large round basket. Tightly woven willow wood basket has a small, flat base from which the wall flares upward toward the wide mouth. A rattlesnake pattern decorates the midpoint: rust coloured diamond shapes outlined in dark brown, with brown border lines running above and beneath.
